Surprised to see Duncombe on the list. Lived there for probably ages 4-6 (?) and I'm not sure I'm allowed back. I couldn't get my nightlight to turn off so used a pair of all metal scissors to cut the cord and blacked out the town. Kids can be stupid as ****.
Huh, well you’re just gonna have to make time to get over there and give us a review. This is VERY IMPORTANT stuff.
Duncombe is sort of the exception to the rule, it has actually gotten nicer over the last 20 yrs instead of declining, not many new houses but the people who buy the old ones just take their time and slowly fix them up.
That doesn't happen in a lot of small towns.
We went there, didn't have "Tenderloin Joint" feel to the place and it was like a thing they did for relevance, by seeing the rest of the menu. But that is a one time opinion. Not surprised they couldn't make it.
Tojos makes a good tenderloin sandwich. Just don't plan to be in a hurry to get your food if they are busy. The setup is your basic bar that you would find in any small town. They just made a small kitchen out of one corner and serve very good food.

I'm worried if Tojo wins this... It's great food, but when walking across the place you can feel the floor sink under you. Getting the extra business might be too much stress on the floor.
Also, they serve there beer in frosted mugs if you get a draw. I think only 4 beers to choose from, but after biking on the trail from Des Moines it is a welcomed treat. Also.... Their Prime Rib is awesome.
It has nothing to do with fan vote. A preliminary round of judging occurs with someone doing the initial visit of the restaurant. Then, if scored high enough, the next round of judging occurs with a larger panel of judges. Then they release the top 10 results. There is also a tenderloin trail where restaurants pass a "screening" in order to participate on that trail. Also, the increase of business lasts longer than a year.
I know for a fact that a restaurant that participates on the tenderloin trail in SE Iowa was saved by their Iowa's top burger winning when they opened prior to covid and then hit a wall with that issue. Their owner said they were very close to closing down. Now they remain steadily busy and their food is really dang good.
