We're getting a new 50" Plasma delivered next Tuesday and I'm trying to figure out what wall mount, if any, to go with. We currently have a Phillips 36" HDTV "tube" that ways about 100 lbs on a glass topped cherry TV stand but I'm worried about the weight of the new TV and how it sits. The current tv distributes the weight over most of the surface of the glass whereas the new TV obviously sits more on a small oval centered in the middle where there wouldn't be any direct support under it. The new TV weights about 115 lbs.

So anyways, what wall-mounts are you guys using or what TV stands have you found to have the best quality?

I just used a universal wall mount for my 50" Plasma, it weighs about 75 lbs, just make sure you get the lag bolts securely into studs and snugged up tight against the wall and it is fine. I was worried about hanging it there, so I grabbed a bar and hug my bodyweight from it. It handled close to 200 lbs just fine.

I think you will be fine with it just sitting there too, your CRT does not distribute the weight as even as you think. Most of it is probably in 2 points along the front.

Just make sure you don't have someone throw you a pitch like they would outside and throw the controller into the tv, and about 4 seconds later the tv fall off the wall into the glass table lol....that commercial is hilarious

In my experience it's not so much the mount as how the mount is installed. As long as the mount fits the TV, and the mount is installed properly, they are probably all about the same. It doesn't take much metal to hold 150 lbs.

I gotta agree with Brian on this one, you won't have a problem. In fact, if the 115 lbs is the shipping weight, I'd bet the weight of the actual TV is more around 100 lbs.

Either way, a decent TV stand can support a lot more weight than that. Mine is a glass topped one too.

I'm crossing my fingers that the current stand will hold it just fine because it matches all the other furniture the best of anything we've ever found (hence the reason we bought it) and I'd prefer not mount it to the wall for asthetic reasons.

Thanks guys!

Jeremy, this isn't directed at you specifically. More of a general question. Why do people buy LCDs and Plasmas if they're going to put them on a stand anyway? Why not get a projection for a lot cheaper with the same or better picture?

Plasmas and LCD's have better viewing angles. Thats why I went with a plasma.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but there was an article in our paper just this morning about a 4 year old in Milwaukee that was crushed and killed by a TV falling off its stand.

OK, I suppose there's no way around it, I'm a Debbie Downer.

I'm assuming you're talking about LCD projectors. They work great - as long as the room is dark. The blacks that a projector can display can only as black as the screen that's being projected on. If the screen has any light around it, your picture will get washed out. LCDs and plasmas are a much better choice for areas where the room has a lot of ambient light. Plus, you have the problem of people walking in front of the lens, unless you want a really huge picture, which isn't always the right thing for a smallish room.

A satellite dish is not technically an electronic device.

Depends on if you count the LNBs as part of the dish. I would say they certainly are part of it, and they are certainly electronic devices.

That's exactly the reason we got rid of our tube tv upstairs for an LCD mounted on the wall.
