Well the last time an Iowa State legend left our school to coach another that didn't exactly go well. Different circumstances but definitely plays into my attitude about the situation

Oh and listening to our rival talk about this former Cyclone who went to coach in college against us still hurts

Exactly. Love Hoiberg and what he's done for ISU. Wish him success as long as its not a recruit we want and we're not playing him head to head. Hope he kills Iowa twice a year. I'm 100% ISU and Prohm and that's where our energy should lie.

Even though ISU doesn't play in the same conference with NU anymore, NU is still a rival of ISU for media attention/coverage/exposure, recruits, and for a sport like MBB, even fan base. All in a (relatively) sparsely populated region where those things are not overflowing, and in a region that already has a blue blood MBB program and several other good teams.

It is difficult for me to see in any way how Nebraska being good in MBB (or any other sport for that matter) benefits Iowa State, and there seem to be some obvious downsides.

For me, unless Nebraska is playing Iowa or there is some other extenuating circumstance where Nebraska winning would benefit ISU, I generally like to see NU get curb-stomped. I don't think Hoiberg going to Nebraska is changing that.

Why people continue to obsess about Hoiberg is beyond me. The guy hasn't coached here in four years. I hope he gets the Nebraska job and kicks Iowa's ass a few times a year.
Yeah but there's a special connection between Fred and ISU (and by extension ISU fan...me).
Fred's present at every home game (look up).
He chose ISU (when he didn't have to) and helped Johnny Orr bring respectability to the program.
He turned the program around as head coach when it was in bad shape.

We (ISU fan, most of us) hate UNL.
So it's a real bummer to have Fred coach there. It just is. And sure, I'll get over it but I think it sucks (I guess because I'm a sh*tty person who hates Fred's dreams or something).
I'll stand by for the whaaambulance to arrive.

If Fred goes to Nebraska and eventually wins 4 straight NCAA titles will we hate him?

Yes? No?

Why don't we hate Cael Sanderson? He is a ISU legend and former coach who also bailed on ISU just like Fred did and he's killing it at Penn State, yet we never ever bring his name up in a negative way.

Get over it, boys. Sometimes our legends move on.

Always like Fred but I can’t support him going to a school I have always hated. I just can’t. If he leaves Nebraska for Iowa someday do we still have to support him? Well I hate Nebraska like I hate Iowa. So no I will never support Nebraska

Cael has been a factor in keeping Iowa from winning it all - that's one reason. And he didn't go to a rival.

When you say "get over it, boys" are you referring to the Fred lovers that bring him every other time they post on this site? If Fred is mentioned on this site as often as Cael Sanderson has been, then I don't really care that much. I just view Fred as a former coach. I just don't want this site to turn into www.cyclonehuskerfanatic.com. So I agree the Fred lovers need to get over their obsession and move on.

Being an ISU fan is more personal than being a fan of a professional team. Most/many of us spent several great years there, met friends and possibly met our spouses there. We're loyal to that.

Even though coaching is simply Fred's job, he is still one of our own. Seeing anyone with ties ISU go to or root for a rival is gonna be hard. I don't have a big problem with how our fan base is split on his decision. It's to be expected. (although the obsession-level posters are creepy )

I have no issue still being grateful for all he's done as a player and a coach. The past won't change. However, I won't root for him as a coach at Nebby just because he's Fred. If he ends up as their coach, that's how I'll view him moving forward. Nebraska's coach. I'll wish Fred well, but I'm not cheering for that team unless they are playing someone I dislike more.
You say this like Fred is some transfer player that came and left and not someone who was raised in Ames, in and around ISU for most of his life as an ISU fan. It's neat that you spent a few years here though.

Just as fred doesn’t owe us anything, we as fans don’t owe him anything. I’m not going to go out of my way to root for him at Nebraska. I appreciate what he did as a player and coach, but beyond that, I don’t care. It just shows that Iowa State was just another job to him, which is fine, because it’s his career, so best of luck to him.

It’ll be amusing to watch the blow hards here make excuses for him if he starts beating us out for recruits.

My biggest annoyance is the people acting like he left us for Nebraska. He left for a promotion in Chicago. If he had left ISU for Nebraska in 2015 or if we had an opening and he chose somewhere else, then sure, get mad about it and I'd be right there with you. I don't know why anyone expects a competitor like him to just sit at home and do nothing so he doesn't hurt ISU fans feelings.

It's possible to be completely happy with Prohm and still not like Fred going to Nebraska.

I would have been happy for Fred to go to coach UCLA or Alabama or Arkansas or Vandy or . . .

Really, any school other than Iowa or Nebraska. Throw Kansas and other B12 schools in there as well.

Nobody should be angry with Cael for leaving. We don't really cross paths with Penn State. He has better recruiting, it's objectively a better job.

I'm not going to burn any Fred memorabilia or egg his house. But I'll be damned if I'm going to cheer for him at Nebraska.

Here's some good news to look forward to. During down years at Nebraska for Hoiberg (and we shouldn't assume he'll be an instant miracle worker) it's an opportune time to troll Husker fans with Cyclone basketball glory, much with Freddy included. While we wish him success, if he indeed does end up in Lincoln, we can also look forward to these trolling moments. Any time you get to do to that to Nebraska it's a good thing.

I think I was expecting him to stay in the NBA or at least go to a college program that has some semblance of respect. Not the team in the state right next to us that is 0-7 in the NCAA tournament.

I'm not happy about Fred going to Nebraska but I think my tipping point of going anti-mayor will be if he's at Nebraska for some long period of time or longer than he spent at Iowa State. I shouldn't care but it bugs me.

Wherever I go, there I am.
What's the big deal? Good luck to Fred in his future endeavors. When he is taking actions positive towards Iowa State, I will be happy to see him and to join him as an alum and a fan. When he is taking actions that are neutral towards Iowa State, I won't see him at all, and I won't care. Should he take actions in opposition to Iowa State, and only then, I will be decidedly against him.

Not exactly sure.
I don’t care what he does. To me, I feel ISU was just a job to Fred. So to me, he was just another coach. We took a chance on him and he used us as a stepping stone fairly quickly. I have no dislike for him, but don’t slobber at him either.

He said he left college because he hated recruiting so I don’t think he is serious about NE. I think he is leveraging them for more pro positions. Unless he was just being dishonest with the recruiting narrative.

I could care less about Hoiberg taking another college job (well that's partially true since he said how much he hated recruiting after he left ISU) but what bothers me most is that him taking a college coaching job right next door is a kick in the junk to ISU and Prohm.

People who say it won't affect Iowa HS recruiting or impact Prohm and ISU are naive.

I was always been a Hoiberg fan but that will end if he takes the Nebraska job.

I'll ghost him like a slutty ex-girlfriend who tells you she hates thrash metal but then ends up sleeping with every member of Cannibal Corpse after you break up...wait, was that out loud?
