As a Hawk fan, I would say the key matchup for us is generating some semblance of chunk plays. The offense needs to have 20+ yard pass plays and 10+ yard running plays in order to be effective. I don't think that Iowa has the offensive ability to drive consistently down the field, with shorter gains on each play, and win the game.

As a corollary, if Iowa can get a short field, similar to what ISU did against, UNI, that would minimize the need for longer, chunk plays.

i dont see anyone on iowa's team that can match up with Lazard. i suspect we will less blitzing from them and more of their traditional Cover 4 as they try to contain the deep ball. Sam will need to be accurate and the receivers will need to pay attention to the nuances of that defensive scheme and settle their routes in the soft spots. if sam can get some juice on the ball the deep outs will be there.

The special teams will be an interesting matchup also. The great field position ISU had really gave us a great advantage over UNI.

I'm looking forward to seeing Dale Pierson vs that young left tackle--what's his name? Boone Myers? For that matter, Trent Taylor vs Boettger could be fun to watch, too.

With both fan bases feeling pretty good about our victories, I was wondering what match-up you are looking forward to watching. For me there are two:

Sam vs Iowa secondary: Lots of hype on the Hawkeye side of things about how great their secondary is, hoping Richardson has a big day and can pick them apart. This could also be a WR vs Secondary issue, but I think the more important aspect is how well Sam can deliver the ball.

ISU O-Line vs Iowa D-Line: This is crucial. Can we a a push for our run game? Can we give Sam time to throw? How well does Campos fair against Ott?

Your thoughts?

And **** Iowa

Agree with some other posters, I am excited to see if the revamped defense can truly stop a good running team. If they can stand up to it, we have a great shot at winning the game.

**** Iowa!!!

I know it's cliche, but definitely the case this weekend, the game will be won at the line of scrimmage.

Yeah, I'm really interested in seeing how both our lines perform. Can our D-line get pressure against what is, for Iowa, probably a subpar line? Can our O-line contain what is probably a pretty decent D-line for Iowa? If we control the line of scrimmage I'll start to feel pretty good about this season.

Agree 100%, I think Iowa's line is pretty young especially on the edges, which is where we have the most depth and speed, I see, Pierson, Taylor, Thomas, and Luna having big games.... Which ever team reacts to the pressure best will win.....

I think our D will do what it does and make enough stops to get the win. This seems to have been the case for a few years now. The only question is can our offense put up the points? I think we can hold them to under 20 points for the game, but can we move the ball well enough and actually do something in the red zone? I hope MM has a great game-plan dialed up and our players can execute. That's the biggest thing, EXECUTION.

I totally agree......EXECUTION is key so all Hawkeyes should be EXECUTED IMMEDIATELY! :twitcy:

We need to make their linebackers play pass coverage on someone other than Boesen. That happens, I think we have great mismatches. Their corners looked solid but they didn't have to play much defense because their qb was getting swallowed by Ott within seconds.

Quentin Bundrage vs. Turnovers
Lazard vs. Iowa's Secondary - He just looks different than college players and he's a freaking So!
ISU OL vs. Iowa DL
Sam vs. Sam's Head
ISU DL vs. Iowa OL

...so pretty much everything!

Our D-Line vs their O-Line. If the D-Line is gonna be as good as we hope they will be this season this is a match up they have to win.

I'm curious if KF will throw caution to the wind this week vs ISU. 4th downs, and gambles....tossing out "His" percentages. I feel like I've seen this outta KF a little before in the opener and then it disappears, not just against ISU, but against other teams.

Im going with Iowa's O-Line vs ISU D-Line. If we cant stop the run it could be a long day and I really think it will be the deciding factor in the game.
Iowa basically starts the same OL we faced last year and we held them to 2.9 YPC

Agree with a lot of this. I think your receiving group, which is easily the best we are going to play this year (and frankly, scare the crap out of me), vs. our secondary is going to be a good matchup. King has potential to be a one of the best in the B1G, and Maybin has grown a bunch, he's also one of the fastest guys on the team, so that matchup will get fun to see unfold. As far as our linebackers go, they were green last year, and frankly were awful. They have grown, and have gotten much, much better, but still have a ways to go.

Overall, I agree with a lot on here. I think the game is won on the line. If your Oline can give Sam some time, I can see him shredding us. However, if we can get some pressure and keep him off balance, then that bodes well for Iowa. Flipping it, if Iowa can win the Oline war against your Dline, and run the ball, then thats huge for Iowa. That will open up the pass, dip into your depth, keep your O off the field etc. So thats my vote- Iowas Oline vs. ISU's dline.
I see all these fan accolades for King but he wasn't even honorable mention B1G last year by the coaches. Why is that

Iowa plays a quarter/quarter/half defense. They play it nearly exclusively. They aren't going to change their defensive sets to account for Lazard. He's a good player but no where near THAT good where Iowa needs to change defensive alignments to account for him.
