Right or wrong my first thoughts after watching.

Momcilovic coming off the bench is certainly a choice. Arguably our third best behind Gilbert and Lipsey.

I thought Rock would get more minutes than he did.

Jefferson and Jackson look like they’re a really solid duo down low.

Our bench looks pretty deep and it’ll be interesting to see minutes shake out as the season progresses.

Surprised Watson stuck around. Looks like he won’t see much playing time as the season progresses.

Watson is very versatile, he will see the floor a lot , can rebound and play d.

Josh Jefferson is a ball player. Dishon might be, looks the part a bit. Indrusaitis may be as well, off to a good start. Curious to see how it changes for him as the comp level goes up.

Need to see more from Heise and Chatfield yet. Chatfield has been doing an early-stage Big Rob impression so far, but there's plenty of time to get it going.
I thought all looked good but I question Jeffersons ability to hold on to the ball.

DJ looked bigger, stronger, and slower than BRE. Interested to see how that shakes out wrt the defense.

I also think we are going to wish we had 1 more big to eat some fouls thru the course of the conference season. Although maybe those games you play "small ball" with just one big and Milan at the 4, with 3 guards.

Edit - forgot about Chatfield, although he looked really slow and not as big as you'd want to make up for it.
I am concerned, but not panicked, about the bigs situation.
We may be a touch slower on D right now, but IMO we more than make up for it in size, depth, and skillset with DJ, Chatfield, and Jefferson. JT Rock being a body that could spot spell in foul situations.

Just watching the shooting and defense rotations, I would not expect a 39 point victory. TJ will keep on it and they will have another season like last year. The freshman was impressive. He will have a huge role next year. We will lose a lot of players.

I don't see Watson seeing the floor much. His minutes went down last year, I doubt they go back up this year.

I think there will be games Watson will play a lot due to matchups. He has the length and athleticism to match what a lot of teams have on the wings. Overall, this team is more skilled offensively but less foot-speed/lateral quickness could hurt us on defense. Watson can help in that regard.

I would be mad that TJ didn't reward him for being loyal.
It's great that he stayed at ISU, but that in and of itself isn't a reason to give him more playing time.

Watson is a consistent corner-three away from being a dangerous offensive player. Hopefully he's worked on that (TJ mentioned it in the podcast with CW recently), couldn't really tell much yesterday. Without that threat from long-range he's kind of like KJ Adams on KU, great athlete but messes up your spacing on offense badly if you don't have to respect his shot.

He's such a good defender there's no reason he shouldn't be seeing 5-10 a game. We have more than enough shooters that should open up his cut game.

One of the many great things about TJ. Last year there were times where Watson and Pavs were out of the rotation. Then there were critical games where they played big minutes and made big contributions to win.

There are going to be games where there's largely an 8 man rotation and some of these guys don't step on the floor. But there will be moments they're called on depending on injuries, matchups, and foul trouble. This is important for all these guys to remember, and I have no doubt the staff reminds them every day. It's one thing to stay fully engaged in practices to be a great teammate. It's another thing to stay engaged in practices because even if you're not in the regular rotation, you know you will be called on at some point to play.

It will be interesting to see how the rotation shakes out.
We're a top 5 program also, and all these guys are a part of it. The way they practice and how they are in the locker room is very important. Nothing worth having comes easy. All these guys can reach higher goals at ISU then they could at most programs.

Maybe, but he definitely needs to be at least late season Watson, probably more.

At times he was such a non-factor on offense last year that it really bogged down our half-court offense as a whole last year. The advanced statistics were showing this last year and that's why he wasn't playing. Late in the year when he at least started attacking hard with some back door cuts, he could provide a little space and some production, and that made a big difference.

The other thing to keep in mind is as great a defender as some guys are, if your offense struggles, that means more turnovers, more missed shots, and more opportunities for the opposition to score in transition. So it reduces the effectiveness a great defensive lineup if they struggle offensively.

It's really up to him. I think he could be a reasonably effective jump shooter, or guy that can take a guy with an explosive 1-2 dribble move. You're right, he's a terrific defender, but he has to be at least some factor on the offensive end to at least not create spacing problems. Maybe he's developed that and just needs to let it rip. He doesn't need to be a great offensive player. Just serviceable.

I do think some of the challenge last year was trying to play Watson at the same time as Rob, just because that's two guys on the floor that are going to lead to the lane being clogged and have plenty of help defense against our scorers. Maybe with the higher offensive potential of Jackson and Jefferson it helps Watson get on the court more.

But more than anything I just want to see him let it rip a bit and get little aggressive offensively. If he does that with some success he's hard to keep on the bench.

I think there needs to be more effort to get him the ball where he has his strengths offensively. He's often just standing at the corner three to create spacing. Then crash for a rebound. I don't think he's doing that against direction. I think that's what he's told to do.

Yes, I agree that there's more offense this year and that's why I'm saying even if he is a little drop off offensively it shouldn't matter as long as he's cutting to the basket and taking the open shots he gets. He doesn't get enough time to really see what he can do though.

I just want him to get more time because when he is out there I see lots of good things from him. Offense isn't everything. He had 2 blocks and a steal last night and played what... 6 minutes? And that's including garbage time.
