To name a few

Porter Moser
Craig Smith
DeVries
Casey Alexander
Nico Medved

Each has shown the ability to build, have some midwest flavor, and can coach. This will be a lengthy rebuild and it’s so damn lazy to just hand the keys to Otz.

Porter Moser has had 7 losing season out of 17 total years in coaching. He was fired at Illinois State. The five seniors on this year’s team has been the linchpin to the uptick. He’s a hard no.

Casey Alexander doesn’t have any ties to the Midwest but rather it’s another young coach at one of the better coaching positions in the Ohio Valley.

The other three I think should absolutely get consideration.

Smith would be my choice. I really hope we don’t find out that he had interest and JP turned him away. History won’t look back kindly on it.

Maybe we'll get KU in the B12 tourney, should beat them if the progression continues ISU should get them next time. (I say hopefully).

4 of those 7 losing seasons have been at Loyola......not exactly a basketball powerhouse before he came. And the "uptick" you speak of started in 2016-17. A year before their final four run. Most of these seniors today weren't even on campus. And since their final four year, Loyola is 59-28 and just schooled DeVries and Drake. Have they fallen off of the F4 season....yes. So did TTU and most who are not blue bloods. But it's not like he is stinking the place up.

He would more than likely recruit the midwest (chicago) as good or better than anyone on any list I've seen. And by looking at his career, what happened at Illinois State almost 15 years ago seems to be the outlier being bracketed by success at both Arkansas State and Loyola. So if he is considered a hard pass......so is T.J., DeVries and most of the other mid majors on peoples list.

Williamson and Krutwig have played all 4 years. Literally he didn’t have a winning conference record at Loyola until the Final 4 season. He is a solid mid-major coach but “elite” coaches don’t have his type of down years.
Medved, DeVries, Smith and T.J. all have better chances at being successful at a Power 5 job.

Who are the better candidates in your opinion?

I have posted previously that ISU knows TJ pretty damn well from his previous time at ISU. So I wouldn't be too upset if TJ is hired and I believe TJ is a better coach than Steve Prohm. But if I am Jamie Pollard, I would want to make sure TJ has a great staff to support him.

But based on his success at UNLV, should TJ even be considered for the ISU job?

This year UNLV is 5-6 in the MW Conference and 4 of those wins are over Air Force and New Mexico which are a combined 3-25 in MW play. Honestly, would any other P6 school hire TJ if they had an opening this coming off season? IMO no.

People have posted that he is in a rebuilding year, but he is returning 3 starters from last year's team (Hamilton, Diong and Coleman). Plus he added his stud player from SDSU (Jenkins) and Grill (ISU). So he has a pretty experienced roster this season. If the argument is this team hasn't had the opportunity to mesh because of Covid. That is the same argument some folks have proposed for keeping Steve Prohm.

Getting back to your question, who are better candidates? I would say in the Mountain West alone, there are 2 coaches with Midwest ties, have great teams and play tough: Smith (USU) and Medvid (CSU). I also like Kyle Keller at Stephen F Austin. He has a solid Big 12 pedigree. I also think Jerome Tang from Baylor would be a good option.

As for him "literally" not having a winning record until the final four season is just not true. He went 24-13 in 14/15 and 18-14 in 16/17. And Williamson and Krutwig were not playing in 16-17 which I consider the beginning of the "uptick" considering they haven't had a losing season since. So to say todays five seniors are "linchpins" to the uptick is wrong. And even if they are......so what. That's five great years and 6 of the last 7. What....do we have to wait and see what his next class will do to see if he is qualified? The guy has a final four on his resume. Not an NAIA, or DII........an NCAA Tourney Final Four. So I would say that alone makes him just as capable as any name you have listed. Although I do like Craig Smith.

there are also influences to consider. Moser failed at ill st. But he got hired by Rick majerus, one of the very best basketball minds in the history of the game. That time helped him grow as a coach.

the only thing I’ll say is if he were to get the job (he won’t even be considered), he’s gotta buy a new wardrobe. Dude it’s all stripes on plaids on polka dots. Pattern after pattern

Good post. And I think you are correct in your answer to the question off the underlined facts.
