On D, it seems like a lot of the problem tonight was that the bigs weren’t moving quick enough the ice the ball screens, and Dayton’s guards would get around far enough to pass or go to the hole. For all of Rob Jones’ faults, he was as good as it gets at staying in front of a guard off the ball screen or forcing the guard back far enough to allow the other defender to catch up.

Our big guys are more physical and skilled in general over last year but I was just thinking the one negative is quickness in general and vs last year.

What's up with the announcers obsession with headbands? He's mentioned it a couple times in the ync auburn game too!

Other difference is no shot blocking, especially someone like Ward who could jump. New guys have weight but no hops. Ward sometimes erased defense mistakes due to his length and quick high jumping ability.

I think our bigs are better offensively, but worse defensively than last years group who had years in TJs system.
I think that’s the biggest thing right there, these guys don’t have the experience in the system that Rob, Hasssan and Tre did. They also lack the quickness to make up for the slow recognition.

I’m hopeful they’ll be more settled in by conference play, but TJ might be served to try fewer double teams and rotations that get our bigs switched into defending guards on the perimeter. These guys have the size to defend the post 1 on 1, it might be a good wrinkle throw in.

Damn, that was one hard ass to face foul. I wonder what the algorithm is going to send my way after typing that sentence.

A few posters were correct that our bigs aren't doing enough to stop the opposing dribbler so that our screened defender can recover.

Also, another change from past Oz's teams I see is that we aren't switching that much. We used to switch everything. Not saying that it's a bad thing overall but maybe we should switch more as teams are scoring on us easily.

Auburn and Dayton pulled Dishon up to the perimeter on D.
Dayton had a few interior dunks after that.

We switched most screens the last two years because Rob Jones was an unbelievably good perimeter defender. It changed the way we were able to play defense which changed the way people had to attack us.

I think Dayton will prove to be a really good team as the season continues. They have great guard play and plenty of depth. I think a lot of our defensive breakdowns were due to the skill of their guards.

Gilbert and Jones were so good. It is incredible how far they have come from this time last year. Many on here never wanted to see Jones on the court ever again and Gilbert was so out of control. Now they are alpha dogs.

Our four transfers have been huge this week. Talk about throwing them into the fire. None of them look out of place and all will continue to improve with experience at this level. Just like Jones and Gilbert did. We needed them to hold their own this week or it would have been ugly.

That's because Jones and Ward were able to switch on a perimeter player and Chatfield and Jackson aren't really capable of that at the moment

Jefferson is very good at on-ball defense away from the basket. Has already had multiple steals in those scenarios. His reputation before iowa state was this.
What I've seen our problem is so far is we are not very connected yet defensively. Meaning, after double teams on the ball we've left the lane wide open for easy layups if we don't get a steal. Hopefully this can get resolved
