And how did that work for UNLV last year? Not a knock on Grill because he isn't a natural point guard, but if TJ trusted him so much then instead of Tre.....he would have seen most the minutes at point when Hunter went out with 4 fouls.
I didn't catch the whole conversation. You're correct next season Grill is easily #4 on the PG rotation list.

I only saw one UNLV game late last year - once our HC position was open - and I have no idea how Grill was listed in the scorebook for that game, but at no time did he function as the PG of the team. He played a lot and hustled his butt off, but he did almost zero ball-handling or initiating on O. I see no chance that he plays that role at ISU either, but I do expect him to play a lot.

I think some of you are giving up on Tre too early. He has shown flashes before and he now has a competent coaching staff, so hopefully he can show to be a serviceable Big 12 guard.

I agree. He is solid as hell on the defensive end (particularly with what TJ wants them to do), and he's a safe ball handler on the other end. Not flashy, and can't face up and break people down like Hunter can, but he's solid when we need him there.

Grill played the 2nd most minutes on Tuesday.

That is true, but I think he took the fewest dribbles. Caleb is not PG. I also don't know whether Tre can go right because he only went left on Tuesday. There will be room for Lipsey next year for sure, but I trust Tre with the ball. Tre had by far the best turnover ratio last year at one per 39.73 minutes played, almost 21 minutes better than the guy with the next best guy. Dude never turned the ball over...

I just don't think Lipsey will be that good next year or play that much next year so I have a hard time taking minutes from Jackson.

Both Jackson & Lipsey are around 6', but appear to have different skills. Lipsey is a ball dominate point guard who will get shots for his teammates. Tre has a decent handle, but I don't see him getting shots for teammates in a half court offense. IMO Tre has 2G skills.

Kalscheur, Grill and King are interchangeable at the 2/3 positions. If Lipsey gets minutes next year, I see him as Hunter's backup OR I can see Hunter and Lipsey playing some together. Lipsey might only be 6"1', but he is a strong kid and IMO can defend bigger guards.

The ceiling for next year's team will be the quality of 4/5 players TJ brings in.

From a one game sample TH ran the offense much like MM, with Jackson at point we saw the furious ball rotation to find the open shooter. Both work.

6-7 with a 40 inch vertical........doesn't matter if he can shoot or dribble. That is Darnell Hillman jump up and grab a quarter from the top of the backboard stuff.
Yeah he’s listed as 6-6 on his recruiting profile but word is he’s 6-8 now

He's solid, he just hasn't proven he can play the point. I feel like Lipsey coming in his good news for him because now he doesn't have to try to be a PG and can just be the undersized SG his skill set fits.

I think his knee injury and his firm commitment to Iowa State was a large reason why his recruiting dried up.
Exactly. He was a top 100 recruit until he got injured. I mean, he played a lot of minutes on a U16 USA team that won the gold medal at the junior Olympics. He’s a lot more talented than his rating is right now

Because he played a lot of like you're describing Grill, he rarely dribbled and was never asked to be a playmaker. It's like hot potato with him, he either shoots or passes quickly to someone else without dribbling, he's the definition of a 3 and D guy. He looked better the other night but last year, he just wasn't comfortable being a playmaker.

Saying Lipsey dropped from the top 100 due to his injury isn't 100% accurate. His initial ranking of 103 in 2/20 dropped to 166 in 7/20, however his ranking jumped from .8834 to .9058. So actually he dropped in ranking basically because more players were being rated.
