This team has a mental toughness that reminds me of Floyd/Eustachy teams. And the Kane/Ejim team. Not sure if they are as talented, but I think they may have that badass mentality that those other teams had. I think they may be for real. We'll see.
I want to see them compete with Creighton and Iowa, then start at least 3-2 in the first 5 big 12 games. Then I will have some hope that this might be real and March might be more than a pipe dream

Chemistry matters. This group isn’t near a Memphis individually but it doesn’t have ego and plays connected. I was skeptical of the TJ hire but there’s clearly buy-in and connectedness which is plenty in college bb. Happy to be wrong about TJ/staff.

I was critical of the hire. I was wrong.

I don’t know what will happen 5 years from now but these defensive performances look like what Virginia did to us in the tourney. Absolutely suffocating teams and beating them up.

I don’t know how good of a coach Penny is but man I liked him a lot in the presser as a guy with character.
Duren is going to be fine but emoni bates is in trouble of losing millions now for not going pro. He was exposed at their midnight madness on his wingspan and vertical but he looked like a fringe nba player AT BEST IMO

I can’t believe what my eyes are showing me. Reminds me somewhat of what Hoiberg did by putting a bunch of transfers together & quickly changing the program. But Fred’s idea of defense was to out score the opponent. TJ has the attack and take no prisoners at both ends of the court. The Slovenian really impresses. What’s the deal with Jaden Walker?

The way the guys in front of him are playing, I think it's hard to get him in the game. Might be slower to adjust to the new defensive scheme and mindset. Hope to see him get more minutes in some of the easier games before conference season starts.

Where was he going to go pro? He was only 17 years old, he was ineligible for the NBA.

With 2 min left in the game, a Memphis fan behind me taps me on the shoulder and asks if we made the Sweet 16 last year. After my laughter stopped, and I told him we won 2 games, he says, ‘2 games in the Tournament?”. After my laughter stopped again and I made it clear that it was 2 total and we have a new coach and players, his reply was, ‘How is that possible? They play so well together!”

I hustled home from the football game to finish my night off by watching this amazing team. I was so excited, I didn't get to sleep until the wee hours this morning.

I was anxious to go online a few minutes ago to see what the Des Moines Register had to say about how this team, which has been picked to finish last in the Big 12, went to New York and absolutely thumped the #25 and #9 teams in the nation. But the Register had no write up on the game, just some photos. No write up on the women's game, either. I know this is the time of year when football and basketball overlap, but still disappointing.

Oh well, maybe this team's amazing accomplishment will give Randy something to write about over the next few days instead of his continued drum beat about Matt Campbell's immenent departure from Iowa State.

Missed the game last night (covid booster had us feeling a bit meh)
Watched the recording this morning and wow!
1) I am ashamed that I do not know the guys names. I have a feeling that will change quickly as they seem to alternate who goes into beast mode on any given night.
2) Has TJ always been that jacked???!!!??!! If I saw him walking towards me in a dark alley I would for sure GTF out the way.
3) I've heard people say this team plays together and it is really starting to show!
4) Their level of D could really piss off a lot of teams and take some of the best teams off their game. Technical, flagrant foul, turnovers galore..... it was clear that we really got under the skin of the Memphis players.
5) I'm excited to see how the next few games go. I wouldn't be surprised if we haven't gotten the best effort from other teams. That 2-22 record from last year is from a completely different team. Other coaches are not going to let their teams focus on the 2-22 but now focus on things this team can do. It will be interesting to see what happens now that we won't be sneaking up on anyone.
