Do you honestly think that this team is equal in talent to those Kansas and Baylor teams? We have good players, but they also had NBA guys on those squads. I like our dudes a lot, but we don't have NBA players on this team right now. We're playing Robert Jones over 10 minutes per game. There's a major, major difference between the two. Yes we have good vets who are playing the best basketball of their careers. The flaws never just suddenly disappeared though. We've just been playing above our level. And that's ok! That speaks to our coaching, culture, and work put in by everyone.
No I don't think that at all. I'm saying there isn't one of those teams at the top of the conference this year. KU has the most talent but they don't have the beast inside like they had then, and Baylor is coming on but doesn't have the guard play that they've won with. I see a ton of depth in this conference, but no clear cut national championship favorite. Fair?

I agree with you that it's ok! I actually took this loss very much in stride. I think if you told any of us back in November that we'd start the conference season 5-2, every one of us would have signed up on the spot. We're a good team and that's fine for year two of the TJ era. My point was, great teams win games like today. Our season isn't over by any stretch, but we got some confirmation today that we're not quite there, at least not yet.

Nope, I've seen it over and over and over again. We have a team that can beat anybody at home but turns around 3 days later and cant beat a team with the 161st ranked offense in front of about 2,000 fans. It's been the exact same story for 40 years with the exception of the Eustachy teams.

It's why when we think we might actually contend some years we still end up finishing 2 or 3 games behind the conference champion.
This squad is 2-2 in road contests, two losses by 4 pts combined. One to KU.

Take a step off the ledge. We're way ahead of schedule with a ton left to play for.

Getting ahd staying healthy is priority #1 now. The fact they're doing what they are without a non con starter is more evidence they're punching above their weight. ISU will still be ranked highly, in second place in best conference in America.

No one likes how this one turned out, but there will be some losses.

Turns out winning on the road is harder than at home, @jereseib cracked the code. I need to call my bookie.

It's not a loss that matters if you want to get in the tourney as a 9 seed with an 8-10 conf record. It does matter if you want to challenge for the conf title and a 2 seed and a spot in Des Moines. Ok state is going to lose a lot of games in this conference, the top teams will beat them twice. if you want all that fun stuff above, then you have to beat the bad conf teams on the road. Still a lot of ball to play.

I think we might be hitting that mid season lull. Lipsey kind of hit the freshmen wall, guys looked tired today, couple guys are hurt. The way they practice and play, they will get tired at some point. Just have to fight through it.
And last year we made the Sweet 16 as an 11 seed and have losses in the first round as a 2 and a 3 in our history. Seeding is seeding. You still have to roll the ball out and play and this team has shown when they bring their A game they can play with anybody. So if we end up a worse seed than we are sitting at right now in the projections, yep it will be disappointing because the back half of the conference season didn’t go quite so hot. But give me our guys against just about anyone once we get outside the Big 12.

Des Moines is obviously a huge prize but also you never know how a team will be close to home. Some buckle under pressure whereas these dudes feel like they are willing to go anywhere to get the job done.

Edit: to add that last year, we did the hard work as the 11 seed by beating the six in the three. The three seed was basically playing at home and then in the Sweet 16 we played what was our “easiest” game against the 10 seed and they ran us out of the gym.

If you had told any poster on here we'd start 5-2 in conference they would have been ECSTATIC. We have two one possession losses on the road that we had a shot at the end to win. I would've liked to see a different shot than a contested 3 from Tre at the end but whatever. This team will be fine. Just need to get Grill healthy

KU, TCU, KSU…none have had to play in Hilton yet.

Something that was problematic in the second half was our ball movement. OSU (to their credit) did a tremendous job of pressuring the perimeter and immediately flashing out on our ball handlers. We had a hard time beating them off the dribble, so we really needed to focus on quicker ball movement, finding open cutters, and focus on getting it to Osun and Tre. Instead we were stagnant and it lead to a lot of tough, contested shots.

Okay, I get that Otz likes to rotate Jones in but he is a terrible matchup against certain kinds of teams. Moreover Osun was wildly effective early, yet was prematurely taken out. He will never be able to play big minutes if we don't teach him how to play and manage those minutes. I thought this cost us today, possibly the victory.

It's not often I will single out officiating but it was objectively brutal today. The missed goaltend, several bogus blocking calls, and the shooting foul on Lipsey are just a few that come to mind. Downright embarrassing display today and it put us at a huge disadvantage.

In the end it was a combination of the above and some ridiculous shooting by OSU that cost us the game. The hardest part of the loss is it was a game we SHOULD have won, but didn't. In this league you have to win those games.

I think it’s pretty funny that we were 5-1 and legitimately playing more consistently and balanced than anyone in the conference through 3 weeks, yet we lose a close one that we absolutely pissed away against a factually inferior team and we’re not supposed to be upset because we were never actually true title contenders anyway. Lol wtf really!? Typical Cyclone dorky ass twisted logic.

“Well jeez ah shucks don’t forget that no one expected us to finish at the top! So don’t be upset when we lose!”

Always has been and always will be loser talk. It’s what losers and dorks say when they lose.

Iowa State absolutely should be contender for a regular season title in men’s basketball THIS season. Nut up and get it done in these games. Had a great opportunity to take control of the race at this stage. I’m pretty confident TJ and the squad aren’t thrilled to be 5-2 because preseason magazines didn’t think we’d be any good. They know this was a bad loss and they’ll need to work to make up for it.

It’s pathetic. We are 5-2 and top 15 and still can win the league. We are this far without a started with Jaz and today Grill was limited. Would you rather lose a tough game two players down on the road or by 23 at home like Kansas did? Road all day every day.

Should we have won? Maybe. Yes it was a frustrating game. But JFC to be where we are this year and see the reaction of fans is just stupid.

A big part of it is it’s the same people that are like, “I just want effort, defense, and rebounding, hard work and a good attitude and I’ll be happy”. Then they proceed to have the shittiest of attitudes. Breaking news: we aren’t winning every game

I am actually scared of being in Des Moines. I’d rather they go elsewhere from a purely basketball standpoint. Think it would be a weird setup/schedule for the team.

How is OSU factually inferior? They're factually close to 4 conference wins just like ISU is. They're a bad matchup physically. Were last year too.

Why 'should' ISU just contend for a title?

The boys are absolutely contenders. Nobody is happy we lost, we just all know that this loss doesn’t lose the conference title for us. It was a big missed opportunity to win on the road and be in first place, not a bad loss. Oddsmakers had it as a pick’em basically. We can beat K State and we are right back on top.

Don’t lose at home this season and we will be right there with a chance because I think we can absolutely get at least another two road wins.

I think everyone is upset we didn't finish the job and get a W but reasonable people realized going into this game, DESPITE THEIR RECORD, that the chances of winning were 50/50. Jaz out. Grill limited. Their defense is great. Forgive those living in reality for not screaming and ******** about a two point loss on the road (which is a Q1 loss). Losses happen by great teams every week.

I think they drop two at home.
