All Fred had was DG when he got here, Scotty and Ejim were solid but a year or so away from being a real contributors. CSP will have Monte (unless he makes huge strides he's not pro ready yet IMO), Thomas, Cooke, Burton, Baab and Carter as well as being in contention for some solid recruits. At the very least, he has 4 or 5 guys who will have played p5 basketball and 6 or 7 schollies to hand out. Fred was starting from scratch with virtually no recruits having ISU on their radar. Let's not get carried away about having ONE less kid (at our deepest position) than we thought we'd have. The Greek was a total project, he showed nothing to make us think he would have been ready in a year or ever. Counting on him was going to a be stretch.
Not to add to much nostalgia to Fred, but let's remember...
McD's last team
1 Garrett (went on to play some NBA ball)
2 Christopherson (the best 3% all-time at ISU)
3 Gilstrap (conference newcomer of the year)
4 Brackins (1st round draft pick)
5 Hamilton (drafted, played in the NBA for 2-3 years)
+ Dendy, Staiger (a jerk but a good shooter), Colvin (a 4* point guard)
The result? Overall: 15-17, .469 W-L% (224th of 334)
Fred's first team was the scraps of that team
Garrett, Christopherson were back (the "worst" 2 of the 5 starters above at the time)
Add in Uncle Jake (underrated transfer), JVB (a shooter in a big man's body), true freshmen Ejim and Godfrey, and walk-on Bubu to spell Diante
Fred's first team had less talent than any McD team. And he still did more with it.
Overall: 16-16, .500 W-L% (190th of 345)
= Fred Hoiberg... pretty good at this basketball coaching thing...
Not saying Prohm doesn't have his own pedigree or chance for success, but Fred took the worst 2/5 starters and some bench scraps from McD and made a team that was, not only better, but a MILLION times more fun to watch.
Right now, we could trot out something like this for next year...
Morris
Cooke
Thomas
Burton
Carter
(heck, we might see that line-up, or a version of it with Niang or McKay, this year)
= still needs some size and experience, but it is *well* on its way compared to the ashes of the end of the McDoorknob era
