I know this is an unpopular opinion but I'm not sure this is true. I hope there is less dribbling and more ball movement next year.
I would like to see multiple ball handlers instead so they can’t just key in on stopping one player stops our entire offense.

Emily was an amazing PG, and if we try the same strategy with Wilson or Jackson I think we will have trouble.

Emily was an amazing PG against lesser quality teams and extremely limited against better quality teams. The JJ Quinerly's of the world have mostly run circles around her for the past 5 years. That was a MAJOR contributor explaining why we had only a single Quad 1 win this year.

We need multi-faceted basketball players. Our team this year was mostly one-dimensional players. Audi has great hands and hard to step within 4 feet of the basket...but limited at most other aspects of the game. Others...
  • Harris (great 3-pt shooter, but very slow and a turnover machine if she attempts to dribble)
  • Hansford (single-purpose spot-up shooter that had a horrible shooting year)
  • Joens (hustle player and 3-pt shooter, almost no ball-handling ability)
  • Tanke (3-pt shooter, not a ball-handler and too slow to guard in the Big 12)

When watching Michigan (and most other top 25 teams this year), I saw teams that had multiple players that can shoot, dribble/penetrate, play defense, and run the court. We looked slow and struggled with way too many turnovers against these teams because we don't have multiple ball handlers.

I will miss Emily Ryan, I think knows the game really well and would go on 5 minute stretches where she could take over a game.

But I just have to disagree with anyone who thinks we will automatically have a downgrade in PG. This team is still playing if the Drake or UNI PGs.

The defensive game plan this year was pretty simple - stay in front of Emily and Addy and if the ball stops, they’re passing to Audi. Got to get a PG that can score off the dribble
I would say that Emily was very able to do that but IMO tried too many times to feed the post or a wing. She felt that had a better shot.

Need to add some speed to the roster. When we missed a shot Michigan would just run full speed to the other end and we did not have the speed to keep in front of them. Wilson is probably the fastest player on the roster, hopefully she takes a step forward in her development and can play a bigger role next season.

When ISU was at its best we had players that could and would run. The combo of Frese, Taylor and Gahan was deadly. All three could dribble, pass and shoot.

Strictly in terms of character, I’m not sure you could ask for a better human being than Bill and Deb in our program.

In regards to rotational issues, you don’t need to look further than Tanke or Joens to see just how much the staff struggled to figure out the right group on the court. Tanke would randomly play 25 minutes one day and 2 the next.

Joens is a scrappy MFer, and while I love Audi, she’s slow and incredibly limited in agility. She needs to be surrounded by scrappy MFers, and I’m not sure we had any moreso than Joens. Feel similar to Jackson.

Find a PG who doesn’t get ridiculously lazy when getting the ball to Audi and we’re fine.
Scrappy is great. But this team needs athletes and kids who bring consistent results.

Feel a big reason the Cyclone women struggled was whoever CBF tried beyond Crooks, Brown and Ryan in the starting lineup really struggled to produce consistently. Consistency is even critical from players 6-8.

IMO the staff needs to bring in a portal PG & PF to start. I could even argue we need a 2G from portal, but I am hopeful Hare is the answer. Or as a 4th/5th option on offense that Jackson, Joens, Harris, Tanke, Beaty or Jensen are ready to be a consistent 5th starter.

A lot of people point to Audi's limitations on defense. But I wouldn't consider Addy an average defender either. After getting the roster right in the portal. The most critical piece of coaching is this staff needs to devise a defense that hides/compensates for some of our best players limitations. Is that playing zone 100%. Maybe different types of zones? He needs to allow Audi to camp in the paint, but still cover opposing team shooters. Even opposing posts at the top of the key.

Let's not forget that Welle ran the floor well too which was a big advantage we had on the fast break. Her defender was usually well behind her so we could hit her trailing and she would get a lot of easy buckets in transition. Those 3 also were consistent 3 point shooters Welle could pass out to when the defense would double and that is a problem we had this year that while we have some players can shoot the 3, we don't really have 1 or 2 that would make you pay consistently or had a quick enough trigger to shoot it when they were open.

Yeah…she was a dream post. Those come along in WBB a couple of times a decade it seems. Big, fast, lefty, smart, and talented.

We need quickness and the ability to dribble penetrate. Long time since we have had either.

To put it simply, we need to hang on to our most important players and get OLDER! The Cyclones had 6 Sophomores (6!), two Freshmen, three Juniors (all transfers and one, Hare, redshirted). And one fifth year Senior. In comparison, Kansas State had 6 Seniors this year including 6th year (or was it 7th year,? 8th? 9th? 10th year?? ) Lee.

Yes, we need more consistant outside shooting. But in the past several years we have lost too many to the transfer portal. I worry about Kelsy Joens transferring but her seeing what happened to Aubry being buried at the bottom of the bench at Oklahoma may give her pause to think about that grass being greener.

KSU goes to the Sweet 16 and contends for the conference title with Lee and Sundell. ISU has nearly mirror images of those two with Audi and Addy. Can ISU match KSU’s coaching and supporting cast to do likewise next season? Certainly attainable but I have my doubts it can be successfully done on both counts.

Fritz is another perfect example of the grass is not always greener too. Starter averaging over 31 mpg to bench warmer and 8 mpg at Baylor. Did start for TT and 26.5 mpg this year but sill has never come close to the production she had at ISU. Bristow also did not have a bump in playing time and production transferring to TT who was just 4-14 in conference play.

So what? I was clearly posting about matching or exceeding KSU’s results next season (and 2027 as well).

Can ISU put together a supporting cast for Audi/Addy and coach them up to achieve or exceed what KSU accomplished this season?

You were clearly implying that K-State's success is based largely on two people, ignoring (or more likely choosing not to include) the fact that four of their five starters have played together for four years.

No, I was clearly implying that Audi/Addy = Lee/Sundell and in order for ISU over the next two seasons to match or exceed what KSU has accomplished this season, ISU will need to improve Audi/Addy’s supporting cast through recruiting/development and coach them up. And I question it will get done.
