While preparing for my colonoscopy. I had a lot of time to sit and think. One of the things that came into mind was "I'm 6'2, fat, and old. Why am I sitting on an 18 year old toilet designed for a child?". I have three in the house that I'd like to replace but I'm going to just start with one and had some questions.

  1. Do they come with everything I need. Like gaskets and such. If not, what do I need?
  2. I'm going to go with the chair height ones. I'd like to keep each one under $300. I plan on going with traditional flush instead of the two flush thing on top like those weird Europeans use.
  3. One Piece or Two?
  4. Glacier Bay, Kohler, or American Standard?
  5. What do I do with the old toilet? How do I get rid of it?
  6. Anything else I need to know about the install?

1. Maybe some do, but in my experience you also need to buy a wax ring kit. Actually buy two. I usually screw up the first one. They are cheap.

2. Some Europeans are weirder than others. Some Americans are less weird than some Europeans.

3. One Piece removes one place where leaks can occur. I like them. But you can't move part at a time. The whole thing has to be moves at once when installing, and they can be heavy.

4. No prefernce. Get the largest diameter fully glazed trap you can find.

5. Habitat Restore goes through a lot of toilets and is usually happy to have them donated. The one near me says that a lot of bars go through a toilet a week because some dumb drunk drops a beer bottle in the toilt and breaks the toilet bowl.

6. It's not hard. There are plenty of videos on Youtube if you've never done it before. The trap on a toilet is cast into the ceramic, so once you remove the old one, plug the hole in the floor if you aren't going to be installing the new one quickly. Have fun! It's satisfying to diy something like this. And you get to be the one to break in the new one! You have to yell "FIRST" though to let everyone know what you've just done.

Its been a while sense I replaced our toilets but it seems like they did come with a wax ring and all the stuff you need to install. I would recommend getting this. it was easy to install and if you have issues setting the toilet it doesn't get ruined like a wax ring. Been using ours for about 4 years now and no issues.

Depending on the waterline you have going from the wall to the toilet you may need to get a new one of those expressly if you changing the height, as the new fitting at the toilet is most likely in a different spot then the original.

I would actually throw a hard disagree there. An extra thick wax ring is absolutely the way to go and you won't have issues. The wax free ones can very much so have issues and can be finicky, in my experience. Just make sure you get all the old wax off prior.

Some come with wax rings, some do not. Everything else should be there. You may need to adjust to a thicker ring depending on what you’ve done with your floors. Make sure it seals. After setting it, don’t try to lift and set it back again.

If you’ve heard of the brand, it’s probably fine. Kohler, American Standard, Toto, etc are fine choices. The Eljers from Menards have been fine at our house too.

The old toilet just gets tossed in the trash bin.

Don’t over-tighten it. The porcelain will crack. Tighten it just enough that you can’t wiggle it with your knees.

Watch some YouTube videos.

Might be more than your target price but I'm a fan of Toto + a Tushy bidet

One more thing. This is the easiest way to drain your old one.

Turn off water supply
Flush the tank empty
Shop vac the bowl

Would recommend (most are my personal preferences - and several have already been mentioned):

Chair height.
Elongated bowl.
Add-on bidet (You can usually pick a decent one up for 30--50$)
Extra wax ring. Prefer an extra/stand-alone one to the ones that come with the toilet. (Just a couple bucks).
1.6 Gallons Per Flush.

American Standard has been what I've used with a combination of those criteria and price.

Or you could always go with this!!
