My quick question about the chart here is in the SLB spot.. as many of you have seen.. but my question is: isn't *Deon Broomfield a DB? or did we switch him and I missed it (good chance here) .. did anyone else notice this? and what are thoughts... also . what does anyone think about Tau’fo’ou or George stepping in and helping out at SLB ? ? ?

I don't understand what you mean here. Apparently the coaching staff likes what the 2nd string is bringing if they are over Irving in the depth chart?

Do you mean, you wish Irving would have stepped it up more?

It probably means he doesn't like Patrick Neal.

Perhaps. I think it could also mean that the kid has only played football for 2-3 seasons and they would rather redshirt him to give him another year to get better. I was hoping that if he was near Patrick Neal they would play him over Neal rather than chosing to redshirt him.

Yep..doesn't like Patrick Neal.

I like how Willie Scott is still second string. He had a great spring game. Also of note is Chris Young at second string, I've heard that Gary had a good training camp, so Young has apparently been stepping up.

Willie Scott was a beast in the Spring game. Can't wait to see if he can replicate that in a real game situation.

That position is more of a Strong Safety in the 4-2-5 scheme we have been running. It's a bigger defensive back that can flex to do run support if needed, blitz from the edge a little but mostly a fifth defensive back. We are mostly running only two linebackers the past couple of years, one in the middle and one on the weakside.

Cheers

Yep..doesn't like Patrick Neal.

Actually that isn't what he was saying at all.

Patrick Neal is a nice role player at DE but he isn't an impact player. Irving could very well be an impact player when he is ready so I don't think his statement has anything to do with liking or disliking Partick Neal. His statement was simply that if Irving is anywhere close to the talent we all hope that he is then he would love to have seen him pass Neal on the 2 deeps.

I'll take an impact player over a role player every time.

I was up at the Scrimmage last Saturday and watched him. He is a specimen and hopefully will pan out. But to say he's raw is an understatement. He was going up against the 3's and never got a decent push into the backfield. I never saw him push anyone around or get through. Not saying he isn't going to be good, but in no way shape or form is he ready to play right now.

Let the kid redshirt and get some size, speed and technique under his belt. Based on what I saw, if he's playing this year, it's going to be a long year.....patience my friends!

CyBelieve has it right on Irving. His body looks like an NFL d-end right now, but his coordination has to catch up to his body, which is understandable at a young 18. It's like Homan was in basketball, big, raw and uncoordinated as a freshman, then getting better each year until he was all Big 12 caliber as a senior. I could see the same development with Irving, but he is not ready to see the field yet.

Anyone still expecting Irving to contribute this year needs to take another look at these posts. Or maybe go back and read some of Wally's comments from last winter when Irving signed. Wally was/still is high on his potential, but was honest when he stated that Irving likely would need a lot of improvement in his technique. Keep in mind that a 6'7" kid who just turned 18 last week will struggle picking up technique more than a guy a few inches shorter and a year or two older.

If he works as hard as possible, he has plenty of time to mold his raw potential into what the staff hoped to see when they evaluated him. The two biggest questions are will he be ready by next year and will he finish is career on the edge or be a better fit for an inside position.

Does anyone know what happened to Jon Caspers?

He's a handful of practices in on a new career on the DL after not playing it for more than 2 years, and never at the D-1 level. I think it's safe to say he's doing a lot of learning right now. I'm happy to have the additional depth with him there and now Simon also. Gives me a little hope that we may not have a severe depth and quality problem this year and next year, assuming Pompey gets healthy and Caspers and Simon gear in and support the starters.

I think it's also a sign that the staff if pretty comfortable with the top8 guys in the OL rotation without Caspers, so that's a positive for quality and depth in the OL.

I try not look too far ahead with players, but I think it can set us up nicely for having some maturity and depth in a position group that seems to have been forever held together with shoestrings going way back into the Mac era. Rarely have we had much quality depth there, but I actually like how this could be shaping up for us with our current roster and the commits we have already.

Cheers
