I agree that NDSU is not an FCS powerhouse as they have only been in the FCS a few short years and have yet to make the playoffs. UNI is not in your conference your are in UNI's conference. UNI has a proven track record within the conference that you have yet to earn in your 1 season. With that being said, I do think that NDSU can win and will win this game because Iowa State will overlook NDSU for Iowa.

That's right, like a 2-10 team will overlook anyone. We're so good, we don't have to pay attention. Are you serious? This team was embarrassed by their play last year. I don't think you'll see them overlooking anyone. And it's the first game of the year. You're always fired up for your first game of the year. If it was in the middle of the season with Iowa next, you might have a point. Since it's not, the only point you have can by covered up nicely with a baseball cap.

Am I the only one who isn't taking this game lightly? I remember when we all thought we would kill UNI, then they caming to town and left with a W. I can see this team overlooking NDSU and looking ahead to the Iowa game (cause we clearly put much more emphasis on that game, as we should!) and coming out a bit flat.

This game will be much closer at half than most on here think. We will end up pulling away towards the end though, when the talent and depth will who that NDSU is overmatched.

They are in our league you know?

This is the stupidest statement I have ever read on here. With that arguement, I can say, Texas and Oklahoma are in our league you know?
So this game is the equivalant of Oklahoma vs UNI?????????:jimlad:

JBB,

I think it is great that you feel as strong as you do about NDSU football - I really do. FCS teams will occassionally shock the world and beat an FBS team, but that does not mean they are even close to that level.

I'm not exactly sure how I would feel about FCS football if I had gone to an FCS program, but from my experiences and history of being a football fan, I believe I would have a really hard time getting excited year-in / year-out about my team. What exactly do you have to look forward to each year? Small crowds, no tv, no chance at any meaningful success.

Please don't take this as a bash on NDSU because that is not what I am intending, but for me personally, I don't understand where the excitement comes from and how it is maintained/reinforced.

As an ISU fan, we certainly do not have a grand tradition of winning or success. But there is always the hope that we can climb the ladder and become a good team / start a football tradition in the FBS. That is what keeps up going. NDSU does not have that goal available to them, so what is it that keeps NDSU fans hungry?

I know UNI. UNI is a good friend of mine. And NDSU is NOT UNI.

You are a Hawk anyway, so I'm thinking you are directing the "put more emphasis" statement at Iowa.

The BISON have met the competition, the best there was, and the record stands as it is.

NDSU was competing against smaller colleges, on average, but having a lot more success. They played the best there was and they have an overwhelming winning record. Thats the overlap Im talking about. Thats what makes this game interesting.

I don't see anywhere it saying that you played and beat Florida or Utah last year, or for that matter any team in the top25, so the statement of "best there was" does not qualify in this situation. In my opinion your team has played some mediocre teams from the BCS and managed to win. I think this game might be a surprise to us cyclone fans for the first half, but there is only the slightest of chances that we will lose this game. Good luck to you on your season but I don't think it will start as well as you expect.

I hope we win big. We have the potential to win big. But the program doesn't have that bedrock of tradition that makes you expect to win. So we shouldn't write checks that our team could fail to cash on the field. NDSU is a good home opener for a new coaching staff after a 2-10 season. I will add that I am really glad it is NOT UNI.

It's good experience for both teams.

NDSU should not come in expecting to win, but just to compete at this level. If they can hang for a quarter, that would be HUGE and set the bar for the rest of their season.

For ISU, this should be like an NFL pre-season game. 1st team comes out and scores a quick 30 and then we start substituting guys who need field time.

Some of the posters in this thread make me embarrassed that I cheer for the same team. Try to treat people and opponents with some respect and stop with the childish attacks/comments. I'm stoked for September 3rd and can't wait to grill some bison burgers while tailgating. Hopefully some NDSU fans stop by my tailgate so I can find out a little more about their team before the game. Safe driving!

Does anybody else read some posts and just get embarrassed for that person? Some people on here do not sound very intelligent.

Stop talking about me Q. It hurts my feelings.

I looked at one of the NDSU links that JBB had posted. I just happened to notice that the score of your spring game, (whatever thats worth, not much I realize) I see the score was 10-0. The one touchdown was a 78 yard TD pass. I thought your running back and O line was your strong point. You'd better score faster than that against us.
I realize there are no gimmes in any sport, especially for ISU. But if i was a Bison fan I think I would quietly show up to the game, enjoy the tailgating atmosphere, hope for the upset, and go back to N Dakota most likely disappointed.

You guys have a great tradition, and a claim to confidence, maybe even over-confidence. you are the 2-10 ISU Cyclones out of the Big 12.

This was posted on www.bisonsports.net not too long ago:

"The first thing I noticed when looking at the Iowa State roster was how thin they are along the offensive line, at running back and wide receiver. I think the QB situation is a lot like ours too except their starter, Austen Arnaud, has demonstrated he can play. After Arnaud they dont have any experience.

Alexander Robinson is the only proven running back. The other 2 are a soph and fresh. The freshman, Jeremiah Schwarts was red shirted last year.

Their O line is big, with most players over 300 and tall. It will be a challenge for our defensive line but we may be able to get to the QB, especially against their seconds, which would be a big help in stopping what is sure to be a passing fest.

The Cyclones are a passing team first. This plays in NDSUs favor because our linebackers are mostly unknowns. This is a much better situation than facing a proven and reliable backfield that is the backbone of the offense. Instead they will be bringing their passing game up against our experienced secondary.

Their inexperience at WR might also be a plus for The BISON. Our corners are experienced and good. This is an even matchup and could go either way. Great test for the BISON. This could be one of the best passing teams we will see all year.

Their defensive line lacks experience both in starting positions and depth. The advantage here is to The BISON. We have a proven offensive line that will not be intimidated by the Big 12 Cyclones. They look good at defensive back and Mertens has to be careful. There D backs will be all over the ball. You might remember SDSU had 5 ints last year. If we do that a lot of BISON fans will wish they stayed home.

I think we match up well with the Cyclones. Statistically we look competitive but you have to remember the strength of schedule issues. Their stats are higher quality.

NDSU has to limit ISUs success passing. We can do that with a good pass rush and good coverage. Both look like probable outcomes.

Stopping their running game is a question mark, so NDSU will have to respond with a strong performance from our linebackers.

On the offensive side of the ball we have a good chance of getting our own running game going. I think our O line has a clear advantage over their defensive line which is lacking in depth and experience. Their linebacking corps is also inexperienced. We are going to need more than between the tackles but with some innovative play calling and a steady game we may be able to control the ball on the ground and keep the chains moving. Thats the key to victory. That and no mistakes."

It sounds bad for ISU.

That has to be the absolute worst summary of the 2009 ISU football I have read yet. Kudos to your idiot fan base, that's was a tough crown to grab!
