NCAA source: "Unprecedented" penalties against Penn State

if its true nothing happens to them this year, then that portion of the decision was nothing more than a money decision. Hard to replace the 12 games for their opponents I guess and that just too much money at stake. I would rather see those schools get automatic W's than play Penn State though.

The easy solution to that would be to have all PSU's games be on the road. I'm sure most of PSU's opponents would be fine with that, minus maybe nonconference opponents who would benefit more from the away game paycheck.

.

Make them play all of their conference games on the road and allow them to play non conference games at home with no fans in the stands like what happened a couple of years ago in Europe after riots at soccer matches.

Maybe not, especially if there's a high risk of fan-on-fan violence, fan-on-PSU football team violence, or fans generally doing things that could reflect poorly on their university (signs with vitriolic statements towards pedophiles is coming to mind). They might just prefer to avoid the circus altogether.

A fine will not hurt as much as a bowl ban or loss of a season. Also, for punitive damages in a civil case wouldnt this just take money away from what the victims could be awarded?

The article says the fine money would go to create a fund for child abuse victims

This is now the front page on cnn.com. Not sure if the source that is quoted is the same as the CBS News report I read earlier in the day, but a few interesting snippets:

The source says the sanctions "will really paint a picture that essentially says that leadership failure and systemic failures can't be tolerated."

--------------

While not divulging specifics, the source said, "The penalties go well beyond the loss of a scholarship or not being able to go to a bowl game."

The source also said the plan includes provisions to provide "leeway" and "minimize the impact" on current players who had nothing to do with the Sandusky scandal.

Is anyone else, for the lack of a better word, "Excited" to see what is going to happen?

Is anyone else, for the lack of a better word, "Excited" to see what is going to happen?

It's tough for me to use 'excited' because I've felt no joy in everything that's happened. I am anxious to see what happens; we've never seen a scandal like this, and may never again for a long time. Depending on what happens it has the chance to go down as a major event in the history of college sports (and it appears to playing out that way from what I've read).

So yes, I'm somewhat excited. Not because I'm taking joy in Penn State's (supposed) downfall (to me it's very sad given the nature of the crimes), but because of what I believe the magnitude of this decision will be.

Yeah I couldn't think of a better word, I just want to see what happens.

Uhh....what???!!!

This is absolutely ludicrous. Do you think before you say anything?

Let's see...so, the eighty-odd football players on scholarship "fed the beast"?

So, the 30K students on campus, plus however many have graduated over Sandusky's tenure, they all "fed the beast"?

The athletes in non revenue sports, whose scholarships are paid for by revenues generated by the football program, they all "fed the beast"?

Excuse me? Hello?

Sounds like there's an awful lot of just plain ***** envy going on around here--the same type of thing that made people in third world countries cheer when the World Trade Center went down.

Or did you really think that every American needed/needs to pay "their fair share of penance"?

Uhhh, wow. Why all the emotion defending the undefendable? And, yes I do think. Apparently a lot better than you do...

Yeah I couldn't think of a better word, I just want to see what happens.

I agree CyBer, maybe curious is a better word. Whatever the appropriate word is I am it. I personally don't think its going to be as severe as some think.

I don't think its going to be that bad either, though if any team deserves to be demolished it's them.

Yes, there will be collateral damage. But that doesn't outweigh instituting just penalties.

You dont not put a murderer in jail because their kids might have issues without their parent.
Exactly. And that's what the law and the courts are for. To address the guilty.

The football players and Penn State students and fans who had nothing to do with this are not defendable? What happened was horrible, and it is just football, but any punishment leveled against innocent people needs to be carefully weighed. Be vengeful against Sandusky, Paterno, and the others who allowed this to happen, but a lot of people will be punished who did not do anything wrong.

Weak. Not even close, if you think I'm defending the undefendable. Sandusky can go away forever, for all I care, and I don't mind if those involved in the coverup spend the rest of their lives homeless, they're sued so hard.

So, apparently you do have some issues with that whole "thinking" thing.

I'm tired of this reasoning. The fans and current players usually have NOTHING to do with any of sanctions that the NCAA brings down because of past rules getting broken.

Fans and current players had nothing to do with Reggie Bush
Fans and current players had nothing to do with what happened at Miami.
Fans and most of the current players had nothing to do with what happened at OSU.

Ya it sucks that they have to suffer because of it but the school still needs to be punished or the NCAA would never punish anyone.

Keep trying. Keep failing to defend your position. Keep looking like a fool.

agree, and not to mention the Top QB Recruit in the Nations is still committed to none other than Penn State, if the NCAA doesn't take drastic action and players like that continue to choose Penn State, Penn State gets to keep going on as if none of this ever happened. A $1.8B endowment will take care of any of the money issues. They need to be knocked back competitively for a long time for this to have any effect
