NCAA source: "Unprecedented" penalties against Penn State

Seriously. I still want to know. The administrators (and Paterno) who were responsible are all gone. Not only that, but they are liable for at least civil suits, if not criminal negligence (or dead). So, why punish those who are innocent of any wrongdoing themselves?

Because they need to be punished, they need to realize that there is more to life than a football coach and football. He stood up for what was wrong and they still don't get it.

Because what really allowed all of this to continue was the power of the glorious untouchable Penn State Football Program. That is why everyone did what they did. To protect Penn State Football. And knowing this, could you really say justice has been done if the institution (Penn State Football) that made this all happen is left unharmed? Maybe its about time it gets what it's had coming all along.

IT would be a nice jab taking Joe's record away from him.

This guy is giving a big two thumbs up to that idea

This is going around. Probably not true, but interesting.

I don't like the no scholarships in 2013. If a athlete wants to finish out at PSU, they should be able to do so on scholarship. I can see not offering new ones but don't force current students to leave. I know this sounds strange, but some football players are actually there for the education.

I agree but I think it might just be a way to protect the players who are innocent in all this. Before they signed with Pedo St. they may have been narrowed down to a few schools that wouldn't want them anymore due to scholarships situations.

Maybe limit the transfer schools to only taking 2-3 each?

This is the second time that you've made clear that you believe the common PSU fan deserves to be punished. I really just want to know what exactly they did that doesn't happen at darn near every other D-1 school? You seem to want to punish them for their personal take on the situation.

What's the worst that would happen to the common PSU fan? Being subject to a Walden-like football team? Enduring an Iowa State-like bowl drought?

Remember that with the death penalty, SMU wasn't that much worse than ISU in their rebuilding.

Does anyone else think that this is going to be not very harsh, mainly because PSU agreed upon the punishments. If they were going to get a death penalty like punishment don't you think they would fight it? I mean, those people do seem rather crazy.

I read that as forcing them out of Division I football. wow.

That "they could join as 1-AA" line made me really doubt the authenticity of this; you'd think anyone with any knowledge would refer to it by "FCS", its actual name.

That said, it'd be very vindictive to see PSU playing teams like Lehigh and Bucknell in that 100k-capacity stadium.

And do further damage to their public standing and reputation? Who knows what the NCAA's counter-offer would have been if PSU had disagreed; maybe they were threatening a 10-year death penalty or something if PSU didn't comply.

Taking their medicine quietly and without a fight, harsh though it may be, might be less risky and/or damaging in the long run than engaging in a protracted legal battle.

PSU isn't in the best standing with the NCAA right now, fighting any punishment is only going to further strain a relationship that Penn State athletics can't survive without.

Fighting athletic penalties that were handed down on the basis of child molestation isn't the best PR strategy either.

I am thinking an "unprecedented" fine and some token scholarships along with some post season bans could be the extent of it - unless the fine is to redistribute the competitors that would lose out on PSU not playing on tv or home games? IF it is just a fine and normal sanctions then the NCAA is also guilty of putting money above what is right

The NCAA has been taking national criticism for being spineless for years. This is the perfect opportunity for them to drop a nuclear bomb on a major program with little to no national backlash with anything they sanction and regain the respect and fear they once commanded.

hypothetical question: how harsh would the penalty have to be in order for the big ten to even consider giving them the boot?

i do not see this even being a discussion but it's fun to think

PSU needs to learn their lesson, hopefully they get the biggest book in the library thrown at them.
