NCAA source: "Unprecedented" penalties against Penn State

I'm tired of this reasoning. The fans and current players usually have NOTHING to do with any of sanctions that the NCAA brings down because of past rules getting broken.

Fans and current players had nothing to do with Reggie Bush
Fans and current players had nothing to do with what happened at Miami.
Fans and most of the current players had nothing to do with what happened at OSU.

Ya it sucks that they have to suffer because of it but the school still needs to be punished or the NCAA would never punish anyone.

+1, I don't know why this point is so hard for people to understand.

Why was Iowa State put on probation back in the 80s for violations that happened under Criner? He was fired, Jeff Braswell (and others?) were declared ineligible by the school, but Iowa State was still penalized. WHY! THAT WAS UNFAIR AND IT HARMED ME! As a fan and student at the time I was robbed of my God given right to root for a team capable of going to a bowl game. How dare the NCAA punish ME!

CyBer: yeah, not 'excited' but 'glued to the edge of my seat'...to see if NCAA actually stands up against 'win at all costs' to a disgusting extreme.

If nothing happens of consequence, it will probably being my slow slide of reduced interest in college sports.

There is a forum that I look for 'win at all costs', and it's the NFL. If a player on my team isn't performing, f-him, cut him. If they can take a dirtball, keep him clean enough to stay off the front page, and ride his butt to a championship, great.

But for college athletics, I believe in honor before victory. I've heard it on this site...if we can get some felons in here and win games, let's do it. F-honor before victory. Let's worry about victory first, then work on honor.

That's exactly the mind set that caused some kids to get...well, we all know.

What's the difference, you say? If my NFL team harbors a child rapist, I burn my jerseys and walk away. If my college harbors a child rapist, I have to wonder, when I put my degree on a resume, whether people will say "oh them guys who rape kids"? He's got a degree from Pedo State! I have to think about whether it was going on while I was meeting my wife, meeting my friends, busting my rump to get a diploma.

If the NCAA doesn't take some steps to say that putting winning above everything...including child rape...is wrong, I might as well give up on college sports, it's the same thing as NFL, but not as good athletes.

Weak. Not even close, if you think I'm defending the undefendable. Sandusky can go away forever, for all I care, and I don't mind if those involved in the coverup spend the rest of their lives homeless, they're sued so hard.

So, apparently you do have some issues with that whole "thinking" thing.

are you missing "hole" somewhere in your login ID?

That statement is not about your mindset, it's about how you go about discussing differences of opinion.

Ya, the PSU/Paterno defenders are weird. This should be pretty simple to understand, but it's not for some I guess.

We get punished as fans because we got to enjoy the good times with criner. Even though there were no good times.

My feeling on all of this is that the players and others who will be affected by a serious penalty likely don't deserve it, because it wasn't their fault. They issue here, however, is the NCAA setting precedent. The laid the hammer down on SMU for cheating at a game. They gave Cal Poly a massive penalty because their students shopped classes. The bigger issue here is what kind of message do you send if you say we will not allow teams to have a competitive advantage, but we will hide behind the limits of our bylaws when punishing a crime of complete mortal turpitude.

So I guess it boils down to this: I don't want players to suffer, I don't want the old man that does ticket checks to suffer, and I don't want the guy with a bar downtown to suffer. But I also don't want to see the NCAA put a lack of rule following in a game ahead of a lack of moral decency.

Further, I don't think the Baylor Basketball situation is mentioned enough. The NCAA could have also hid behind the court system on that one, but they levied harsh penalties on them-- and their violations did not pervade the entire athletic department the way this seems to have. So to me it comes down to a simple case of precedent and putting forth the right message. Any action or inaction will have collateral effects on people, but I think a course of conduct that includes harsh punishment provides the most positive effects moving forward.

I completely agree. Life isn't always fair and that sucks for the fans of Penn State. But that's what happens.

I'll be interested to see what type of penalties Penn State gets. Anything less than 20 scholarships for at least 3 years lost and a 3 year bowl ban will be a joke.

FYI.... Here is a screen shot from the Michigan Rivals message board of "leaked" sanctions that are about to be Penn State's fate. This would most definately be "unprecedented." It's on the internet and on a message board so it must be true.......

Same thing that was leaked here about 8 pages ago, somehow I doubt the validity of a 100k stadium being allowed to drop to 1-AA - there is no such thing, its called FCS now

Is anyone else, for the lack of a better word, "Excited" to see what is going to happen?

I'm excited, and have no qualms about using that term. If the bulk or reports coming out today are true, tomorrow will be Day One of truly putting this thing in the rear view and moving on. Tomorrow, for the first time in this whole fiasco, we might see someone demonstrate actual leadership by essentially saying "whether you think its under our purview or not, if your institution wants to be a member of the NCAA, you absolutely cannot do something this deplorable without serious repercussions." It's not about vindictiveness; it's about trying to put a once-revered institution on the road to recovery, and it's about sending a message to everyone saying "enough is enough".

Who in the world wouldn't be excited about that?

Yes, but they're vacating wins back to 1998, when there WAS 1-AA. They're just using period specific terms.

Chill out, man. Jeez louise. I haven't seen anybody here defending Sandusky, Paterno, Spanier, etc. I think Penn St. should be punished harshly, but to label people who didn't do anything wrong as undefendable is vindictive. Every single FBS program has a culture that demands winning, and can be susceptible to something like this. If you change that, I just think people should look at themselves first, and see how much they put CFB or any sport on a pedestal.

Did I miss the offical NCAA investigation into this mess? Is Emmert really relying on reading the Freeh report to apply sanctions so severe? I don't think that's enough, frankly.

I'm excited. I'll admit it. I have the day off tomorrow and I'm still going to get up at 6 to listen to sports talk before the announcement. Penn St is simply getting what they deserve. NCAA has to make sure that football is never put on a pedestal over child safety ever again.

I'm sure Freeh had hard evidence. Emails, texts, documents on the computer, etc. You don't believe it? I sure do. If Penn St agreed to this stuff like is being reported, and they supposedly won't put up a fight, the people now in charge believe it, too.

Emmert was given permission to go solely off the Freeh report. And while you may think that punishments vetted out based on the Freeh report are inappropriate, Penn St agreed to them.
