NCAA source: "Unprecedented" penalties against Penn State

The only troubling part of this for me is the collateral effects it would have on average people. I have no problem punishing the program, and if that effects the players that chose to join the program, so be it. What I hate to see it do is put people out of work...stadium management, security, concessions, etc. Not to mention the businesses in and around Happy Valley that depend on those 8 weekend to bring in substantial profit.

And thinking of the offset of some of this stuff-- I wonder what it will cost them to refund season ticket holders, break contracts with food distributors, break television contracts, etc.

They should be forced to refund ticket prices and fulfill food contracts as well as give back to the community.

I'm not trying to say any of that would unduly burden them, but just considering how much more goes into not being able to play football for 1-2 years than not having two teams show up on Saturday.

Twitter flooded with rumors including between a $30 - $60 million dollar fine.

One writer says PSU will become one of the cupcake schools Paterno would schedule.

The winds are saying the hammer will fall and fall hard

Those average people helped feed the beast that led to the leaders of their university covering up crimes that should garner the death penalty. They ALL collectively need to pay their fair share of penance.

Bit of a sidebar here, but this would be a great thing for college football as a whole. There's so little parity in the sport, and anything that could knock a giant like PSU down is welcome news for me. Hopefully it won't take drastic penalties for every school, but I believe that a redistribution of resources from the "haves" to the "have-nots" would make college football more competitive, healthy, and exciting.

And yes, I realize that being a fan of a historical doormat in a small market somewhat biases me against schools like PSU.

I agree that the penalty needs to be paid, but he does have a good point that unfortunately there will be some collateral damage (as there are whenever penalties are given out, its unavoidable).

Agreed. And being that its so hard for the NCAA to prove guilt in most situations, is why i'd be fine with them really dropping the hammer whenever they are able to prove it.

A fine will not hurt as much as a bowl ban or loss of a season. Also, for punitive damages in a civil case wouldnt this just take money away from what the victims could be awarded?

Uhh....what???!!!

This is absolutely ludicrous. Do you think before you say anything?

Let's see...so, the eighty-odd football players on scholarship "fed the beast"?

So, the 30K students on campus, plus however many have graduated over Sandusky's tenure, they all "fed the beast"?

The athletes in non revenue sports, whose scholarships are paid for by revenues generated by the football program, they all "fed the beast"?

Excuse me? Hello?

Sounds like there's an awful lot of just plain ***** envy going on around here--the same type of thing that made people in third world countries cheer when the World Trade Center went down.

Or did you really think that every American needed/needs to pay "their fair share of penance"?

I admit that I loathe schools like Penn State and may be biased but to say the current players and fans don't deserve the penalty is ludicrous. Happens all the time and Penn State as a brand, as a Sports program as anything other than a place to get an education deserves any and all that is coming its way. Penn State did everything wrong in this case. If reports are true that the sanctions are massive and Penn State is going along with them - then I conclude its worse that we even know and Penn State is just hoping that the public decides their penalty was harsh and take the focus off of EVERYTHING they have done to cover this up

Iowa's easy easy schedule is about to get even easier for the next decade or so, if that's even possible.

if its true nothing happens to them this year, then that portion of the decision was nothing more than a money decision. Hard to replace the 12 games for their opponents I guess and that just too much money at stake. I would rather see those schools get automatic W's than play Penn State though.

Yes, there will be collateral damage. But that doesn't outweigh instituting just penalties.

You dont not put a murderer in jail because their kids might have issues without their parent.
