NCAA source: "Unprecedented" penalties against Penn State - CBS News
CBS News has learned that the NCAA will announce what a high-ranking association source called "unprecedented" penalties against both the Penn State University football team and the school. "I've never seen anything like it," the source told correspondent Armen Keteyian.
NCAA President Mark Emmert will make the announcement Monday morning at 9 a.m. at the organization's headquarters in Indianapolis.
The NCAA had been awaiting the school's response to four key questions pertaining to the sex abuse scandal, including issues involving institutional control and ethics.

If they are using the word "unprecedented" properly, that would seem to mean that Penn State will get hit worse than SMU did in the 80's.

A lot of people are saying the term "unprecedented" refers to the process they used to come up with the penalties.

yeah, that's what Joe Schad has been tweeting. The fact that they are imposing penalties based on the Freeh report rather than doing their own investigation is unprecedented. Also, supposedly the NCAA Board of Directors voted to give Emmert additional power, allowing him to hand down punishment without going through the NCAA's traditional channels. I also wonder if there is going to be some kind of required charity donation involved, as well.

I agree...its "unprecedented" because its not just a football problem. It goes beyond football so they had to determine a punishment that suits the crime

NCAA cannot give the death penalty unless they are already under probation like SMU was. I am guessing no bowls and scholarship losses for 5 years.

I wonder if they'll do some kind of limited tv ban as well? Maybe they won't be able to broadcast home games or something like that.

Wouldn't that be punishing the visiting team just as much as Penn State? How will the visitors' fans get to see thier team if it's not on TV? Not saying that it won't happen, but I wonder if they would ever take that into consideration.

"The penalties, however, are considered to be so harsh that the death penalty may have been preferable, the source said."

Someone said a 9 year bowl ban this morning. Not sure if its acurate. Also heard 1 year witu no schollarships and the next year with 10.

Not sure. I know that it's been done before. Oklahoma and Florida have both received them.

The NCAA knows people are blood thirsty. I imagine they wouldn't throw out the term "unprecedented" if it was just procedurally unprecedented.

I'll believe it when I see it. Coming out so fast makes me think it will be harsh sounding but not as bad as it looks.

I'm afraid of this too. It sounds like PSU's Administration either had some say in it or ok'd it. They could have hid behind the the "you have no authority under the rules to do this" type argument and prolonged this if they wanted to, which makes me think it won't be as bad as some think.

Chances it gets leaked before tomorrow? I'd say high.

With two teams from the big 10 banned from post season play. I think the Qwaks have a good chance of playing in the rose bowl.
