I've been looking for a "creative" outlet for a while (I'll tinker on the guitar and surf ISU sports as well) and took a leap and started making cold-process soap. Did my 4th batch last night (using a ****** merlot as a base for my lye) and started tinkering with colors. I have a stout recipe I'll try in the future to make sure I don't die from estrogen overdose...

Any other soap crafters out there?

Can't you just squeeze together the soft squishy leftover pieces to make soap?

Have considered this because some of the kids and I are allergic to so much, but not sure exactly what it is in most soap that makes some of us break into hives. Ivory is the only soap that doesn't affect any of us so when we travel we always have to take it to use instead of hotel soap. Have similar problems with laundry detergent, Cheer is only one that seems to work for everyone. So some of us also have to bring our own hotel bedding because whatever they use has been washed in whatever industrial strength detergent. Hard for us to pack light.

The soaps I've done so far are all natural - no preservatives. Just my oils and the lye water. I've had a few skin irritations of unknown origin in the past and its hard to pin it down - especially when you throw in potential allergic reactions.

Wait.....does this get you chicks?

Dirty chicks. But by dirty, I mean the kind that don't shave, rarely wash their hair and smell like patucelli oil. The kind that go to lots of craft fairs and make their own dresses.

But I don't do it for the chicks - I do it for the GLORY!

I highly suspect it is the perfumes in most soaps. One of my kids had an asthma attack in an elevator from a woman's perfume. And scrapbooking is awesome, maybe I will get the 15 year old's baby book done soon.

Slippery slope between making soap and scrap-booking or macrame! Gotta be careful.

Testifying
There is a market. My wife buys them once in a while. Does it seem expensive to me? Sure. But it's about the price of a good beer on tap at the Bait Shop, so who am I to judge?

She buys hers from at the DM farmers market.
