For some reason, reading that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Between the Cyclones and Vikings, it's almost laughable after 47 years.

Yeah, that Gary Anderson miss, seriously, that almost got me divorced. It actually changed a lot of my outlook on sports, especially the NFL. I was so pissed it ruined my life for about a week. My wife's Birthday dinner was that night, I missed it. Since then, I've learned to just sluff it off, if I don't, at the very least, I give myself a few minutes to be pissed, then it's over.

Chris,

You must feel pounds lighter now! Like you, longtime Viking fan...parents got me my first Vikings coat (leather sleeves and wool) when I was 7 (back in 1970). Absolute worst experience was losing to the Dirty Birds...that Viking team was probably their best, but didn't even get to the Super Bowl. Hoping for the best this season!

I too follow your philosophy. However, it took me more than a few minutes after the recent KState loss...the neighbors still look warily at my house when they walk past.

Woah. And I thought I was bad after a loss.

Life long Viking fan. My favorite shirt when I was small was a Viking jersey with a 10 on the front and my last name on the back. Many Sunday afternoons were spent reading the des moines sunday register and ripping up the paper as the Vikings were losing. I remember one winter as a kid some of the viking players traveled to our small school to play an exhibition basketball game against the local coaches. The gym was packed.

Will always love the Vikings like my Cyclones. The Vikes still have the best uniforms in the pro's!

Off topic, but I wanted to tell my story on the KSU loss. My wife and I were driving back from Minnesota that Saturday, so I was looking forward to watching the game on the DVR.

I sat down and watched, blood pressure rising with every picked up flag. I really try not to freak out about football games. I used to freak out in my early 20s and let it ruin my week. I can usually cool off for a whnile and life goes on. Even if we lose, I usually just take it in stride, otherwise my life would be hell as a Cyclone fan. I freaked out at the end of the game. I threw the remote. I cussed at no one in particular as my wife was putting the baby to bed. She had seen the score and the Facebook outrage already from our friends. She just said, "Sorry honey" and gave me a hug.

My dad grew up in Minnesota and is a lifelong Vikings fan. I watched games with him as a kid and I cheered for them, but they never stuck as my favorite team. I didn't even know all the history with the SB losses. I just didn't latch on to them. When I was about 13 I really started watching football and I found a style and organization I like in the Pittsburgh Steelers. I still cheered for the Vikes, but they weren't my favorite team.

I watched the Gary Anderson game with my dad, really hoping they would pull it off for his sake. He was crushed and I felt like crap too. That team was so good.

So, for my own health, I am glad that I didn't chose to be a Cyclones, Cubs, and Vikings fan. At least prior to the Cubs winning, it would have been a depressing sports life for me overall.

I was 8 years old when I became a Vikings fan. I was in 3rd grade. I had discovered NFL football (and football in general) less than 2 years prior when I watched something called Super Bowl XIX featuring two guys named Montana and Marino. I enjoyed the game and decided to follow the sport. So, when the next season rolled around, I was looking for a team to root for. My parents weren't sports fans, so I got no help there. Instead, I picked the most charismatic team I could find, which if you're following chronologically, was the '85 Bears. I loved the Bears that season. They were awesome. I couldn't believe how amazing the sport of football was. I was hooked. My parents (like I said) were not sports fans, so I had to sneak in watching football in the basement, watching on a 9inch color tv. It was great.
That season ended so awesomely with a Super Bowl victory. The Bears were a team of destiny, so of course they won it all.

After the Super Bowl, I was riding the bus to school, and I brought the subject of football up to my best friend.
"Did you watch the Super Bowl?" I said.
"Naw," he replied. "The stupid Bears were in it."
"Oh, I like the Bears," I said. "They're awesome."
"No, they suck," he answered. "The Vikings are the best."
"The Vikings, huh?"
"Yeah. Think about it. A Viking is a tough guy with an axe. He could kill a bear, no problem."
"...I can't find any holes in that logic."

And with that, I became a Vikings fan.

It's been 30 years since that conversation, and sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if I had stuck with the Bears. Then I think of Rex Grossman, and it reminds me that even with all of the heartache I've experienced as a Vikings fan, I made the right call.

I love the logic! Following that, what team should everyone be a fan of? The Jets maybe? They have Jets and can shoot everyone from the air and fly away. The Patriots have guns, but **** those guys.

haha this was awesome. To this day I still remember as a youngin watching my dad throw any object he could in the garage after 2 specific games (Cardinals rush up to the line as seconds tic away and no timeouts and Josh Mccown fires a seed to the corner of the end-zone, "pushed out", TD, knock Vikings out of playoffs and put Packers in///and the NFC Championship game vs Falcons). Plenty of other terrible memories along the way, mixed with some great experiences from games both being at and watching on TV.

This was funny though, I like the sequence!

*This year is different though!

Coming from a Cubs fan, here's the thing. All of those crappy losses and crappy teams are worth it when you finally win one. You'll have earned it more than pretty much any other NFL fanbase out there. That's what being a real fan is all about.

Yes it would be easy to be a New England fan until they aren't good anymore and switch to the next good team. But you don't really have anything invested in that. It's a hollow victory.

Just like it would be easier to have been a TOE football fan sometimes, but if/when Campbell really turns us around, it will feel that much better.

My first legitimate football memory is the 1998 season at six years old. I still remember the Gary Andersen kick and my Dad walking out of the house and not coming back in for like 4 hours after that. I did the same thing two years ago when Walsh missed the kick (it was negative 10 degrees). I feel sorry for my future children.
