Sadly, I think the team is still going to have below average and inexperienced guards, and with out those, McD is not going to win.

Unless someone leaves, we'll be loaded with experienced guards. Garett, Buckley, Steiger, Boozer, Lucca, Eikmeier. That six scholarship guards with some experience. We went into this season with 3 experience guards and 2 of them were walkons. Our experience and skill levels in the guard court will be way higher.

I definitely realize this isn't the first time this topic has been discussed, however my question is did GMCD have this problem of retaining players at UNI?

The next couple years will be interesting to see if some stability starts to develop. I'm getting sick of having to relearn the entire teams names every year. Not every team gets to use the "they are young excuse " for 3 years.

I'm not expecting a final four appearance every 5 years, since we have never been to one, although had they seeded us properly on the other side of the bracket from Michigan St. we would have been. I would just like some stability, it think that creates some success in it self

I agree with what you are saying about stability. I think, outside of Wes, most of the guys who have left have been reasonable. Wes was a concern, but unless more of that happens, I won't be concerned.

There will be at least one other defection this off season from the sounds of it. Dunson, Brister, Vette, Taylor, McCintosh, Johnson, Johnson, and Marsden all left ISU without fulfilling their eligibility. Yes, Taylor is an idiot and did it to himself but that is 8 guys in 3 years that didn't want to play (or got kicked off) for McDermott. Throw in Brackins possibly leaving and the rumor of Mann transferring to D-II then that would make 10 in three years. If that rate kept up he would lose 30 guys in his 9 year contract. Kind of alarming

I get what your saying but i personally would love to see mann transfer to clear up a scholy. and i wouldnt mind seeing wes transfer along with like a boozer. And brister vette corey johnson, marsden and mccintosh did nothning for this program when they were here.

All those guys you mentioned have a combined Big 12 scoring average of about 20 ppg. Let's not get crazy here.

No he did not have this probem at UNI. And by all accounts all the players loved him up here.

I'm 100% sure Greg wants stability as well and that's what he's trying to build. Kids today however don't seem to be quite as patient as in the past. The attitude now a days is if you're not playing, me I'm going to transfer seems to be more common.

I agree, the next couple years are going to be very important.

They don't love him as much here.

Wait, this hasn't happened already?

It has to a certain extent. Attendance numbers have gone down for sure but nowhere more noticably than during conference games. Per game averages the last two years:

12,503
13,499
11,954
11,955
14,094
14,376
13,624
14,134

10,639
13,170
12,012
11,919
10,821
11,922
10,407
11,876

For a difference of about 1671 as has already been stated on here. Because of the type of fanbase we have I don't think it will get much lower, but the overall numbers I bet aren't too much worse than last year. My concern is the emptiness of the noncon games next year. If the apathy displayed over the last two months extends into next year we could be looking at CU type numbers of people in the stands.

Yes, we'll have experience, but I don't think any of those guys would be considered even "average" in terms of their talent level in the Big 12. Garrett comes the closest, but he ranks too low in the shooting department. Fortunately, certain talents (like shooting) can be developed during the offseason, and the nice thing is our weaknesses are relatively easy to identify. Garrett - shooting, Buckley - ballhandling, Staiger - ballhandling, Boozer - ballhandling, Eikmeier - strength.

On the contrary, I think it can get much worse. The figures you listed were paid attendance figures - butts in seats were much lower. Many more no-shows than last year, including conference games. Saturday's "real" attendance was about 10,500 tops. How many of those no-shows will re-new next year?
We have to start winning - next year.

I live in MN so it is hard to get back to a lot of basketball games, I bought 4 tickets for the Kansas game, I was in shock that it wasn't even remotely close to selling out. I was embarressed, my parents had season tickets for over 15 years and then I had them until I graduated in 99' I don't really remember any non sell out crowds during conferece games by the mid to late 80's.

Too bad Kansas wasn't as good as normal, or possibly their fans could have bought the remaining tickets for us.

Ummm...they still managed to win the conf this year?!

Yea, that was a big challange this year, and they definitely played better at the end of the season than the beginning.

So ok, at least Kansas fans don't travel well, I will leave it at. It is sad when you lose more nonconference games than conference games. Doesn't reflect well on the big twelve nationally anyways.

The whole point that it was embarressing to have 90% of a crowd there, and preferably a lot less Kansas fans.
