Mediacom internet question

We used to have Mediacom internet at our home when we lived in Ames. While I loved the speed, we did experience spotty service and outages that lasted for an hour or so from time to time. The outages always seemed to resolve themselves eventually and Mediacom could never explain them or resolve the issue.

We now live in Des Moines and own a business that has multiple locations with Centurylink DSL which is reliable, but the bandwidth isn't ideal.

Do other Mediacom internet customers experience periodic outages, or was our experience in Ames unusual? I don't want to switch over to Mediacom for the better speeds at our business locations, but then have to deal with outages from time to time.

We've used Mediacom internet for our hotel here in the West Des Moines - Clive area for several years. Generally very good. A few issues have popped up when we've had to change static IPs, etc, but very few actual outages. The few outages we have had have all been related to people cutting the line digging or severe weather. Every time service has been restored rather quickly to us. Just my two cents worth.

I love the speed, but my internet goes out 5+ times a day. It usually lasts only about 5 minutes but has the tendency every once in awhile to last longer than that.

We had Mediacom come out about a year ago and it worked just fine for a few months, but now it's acting up again. The last two weeks it's rare to spend an hour on the internet without it freezing up for a few minutes.

Thanks for the feedback! This is exactly what I was afraid of.

I have even been researching the possibility of VOIP phone services at our business locations, but I don't trust the quality of our current DSL internet connections and I was worried about periodic outages with Mediacom.

Exact same for us. WDM area. Speed is great when running correctly. Have heard several "reasons" from Mediacom, but nothing makes much sense. Can't say that it is isolated to one time a day as we typically only use in the evening hours, but connection will drop 4-5 times a night. Only for a few minutes, but it is a pain in the .......

I hate to give Mediacom any compliments b/c I've had bad service from them in the past, but I'd have to say in the last two years the reliability of our internet service has improved dramatically. We used to have several blinks a day like other posters have mentioned but they must have upgraded equipment or something because uptime the last two years has been stellar.

I just have it at home and no complaints. Last time it was out for any extended amount of time was the Parkersburg/New Hartford tornado.

Reviving this old thread. I'm wondering if anybody has noticed any improvement to Mediacom internet dropping in the last year to six months? We have CenturyLink and it's very stable, but I need to upgrade/change my modem AGAIN and thought I'd shop around.

When we moved to N. Ankeny we had Mediacom but it was out many times a day before we finally quit them.

Out every other day here in Ames. They've replaced our modem, added a signal booster. Rewired the house. Nothing.

For the last three weeks my problems got much worse than they were in my first post in this thread (post #3)

It would go out, I would plug it back in and do everything they tell me to, and then it would work for literally 2 minutes AT MOST, and then I would need to unplug the modem and do all that crap again.

Things changed today, though. I called the tech hotline and they did a completely different process than they have in the past. They discovered they were able to find my modem, but my modem wasn't sending them any signals. So they reset everything (this was all done via computer) and since about 10 it's not only been on the whole time, but it's much faster.

Ours was flawless for quite some time after several years of spotty service. Recently it's been spotty again. Coincidentally, seems to go along with net neutrality getting shot down in the courts.

If you use Mediacom internet to access a service that competes with one of their own (Netflix, Amazon, Vonage, etc.) it is now once again perfectly legal for them to **** with your service if they are experiencing congestion issues.

We live in Beaverdale and had problems the first 2 years we were there back in 2006-7. Went through all of the normal issues (Signal Booster, resetting, etc). Finally they replaced our neighborhood relay switch (whatever that is) and since then, 7 years, we haven't had a single drop.

We've had Mediacom internet about 2 years now and I haven't noticed a single outage. Live in the Southwestern Hills area of DSM.

Is it just a coincidence that you have great Mediacom service and who you're sitting by in this picture of you eating popcorn:
