"The Miami Marlins, changing even their name to fit a changing country, are looking to become Latin America’s team, catering to the fastest growing minority in the United States, throwing unprecedented dollars at an experiment that will prove, once and for all, right there on Calle Ocho, whether Major League Baseball can indeed work in our weird and wonderful market."

I wonder if there'd be any backlash if some other MLB team chose to target and cater to one particular socio-economic or racial group by going after particular players and getting certain fans?

I would think so.

If Craig continues to develope the way we Cards fans hope he does, is he the long-term guy at 1st? He could ease into it on Berkman's off days this next season.

I hate to see Albert go, and you're not going to ever replace his peak production at first, but I do like the thought of not having 20-25% of the payroll tied up in one guy.

I think I said on here about a year ago that the Marlins would be huge players for Pujols this offseason. Thing is, they want to go 10 years without a No-trade clause. That will never fly for a guy like Pujols so i am guessing if he gets his no-trade it will go down to about 8 years, but still a big risk.

Of course his 10/5 no-trade rights will kick in after five years, so they only have to negotiate the no-trade for the first five years. I'm guessing it won't be a full no-trade but they'll come up with some bonus that vests if he is traded.

bye Albert......hope you enjoy your money.

Berkman for a year and then develop some younger players. David Freese might need to move to 1st Base with his ankles.

He'd be 47 by the time the contract is up! Good call miami, there are plenty of other latin american players to lead your franchise, like 75% of the league.

why anyone would offer him more than 7 years on a contract is ridiculous...how does anyone know a baseball player will still be good in 7 years and into their later 30's...let alone all the way until low 40's

Reference Soriano w/the Cubs. Still have 3yrs/$54 million and the guys done. Long-term contracts should make GM's squirm. Agent is the winner.

The question is, what is a good contract for him and the club? I know the Cards owe him some...he is relatively underpaid for how good he is and what he has done for the team. I would be OK with 8 years at 22 mil. I think he has 5 good years left and then 1 or 2 crap years. You overpay him for those years or maybe try and trade him to the AL to be a DH (assuming you can get rid of the no-trade clause). Pay part of his salary in the trade and let him hit away in the AL and break records. That, or you eat the cost, tell him thanks for a great 15+ years and call it good.

North side Chicago team has been doing just this for years.

ESPN reported this morning that the cards came in with a 10 year 220MM deal. Very disappointed in the birds falling into the trap, if AP was all about the money then let him go to Miami.

The Mets basically did this under Minaya

Sportswriters have written about the Marlins pursuing this strategy when they put together at least on of their World Series teams. It seems to be the Marlin way, then break up the team after winning. I imagine that's why they would not want the no-trade clause for Pujols, and that they're planning a quick championship run and then move him and his contract along.

IF true, I agree that this is really, really stupid. I appreciate everything AP has done for the Cards and the fact that he has been the best player in the game while being "underpaid" (if you can be underpaid at $16mil/) but that's no reason to jeopardize the future of the organization to make up for it. As someone else mentioned, I have no problem with 5 or maybe 6 years at $25-30mil/. I think you can justify that as long as he doesn't totally break down. It's the last 4 years of this thing that are going to kill the Cards.

come on cards, up it to 11 years just to make sure he doesn't get away!!! you know you want to back load that contract as well. Make sure that you pay him a lot when he is really old.
