Nicholas Mason @_Nick5000 Sep 15 Iowa State offered Malik Monk. Fred Hoiberg was in town yesterday to talk with Malik, Marcus and their mother.

Possible ISU connection: Malik Monk and Georges both attended the Lebron James Skills Academy this summer. Do you think they might have met each other there? Or did they attend at different times and/or locations?

On Travis Hines' podcast the other day, he mentioned there was a connection between our staff and his high school coach. Not sure where it may be though.

Or the coaching staff saw him at one of the 8,000 AAU games they attend every year and thought he was pretty good and decided to recruit him.

No reason to be snarky about this. I made a simple observation and posed a simple question. It's a little unusual for ISU to jump in on a bigtime recruit after the other big name school are already in on him, so it's only natural to wonder if there is a unique connection somewhere.

Maybe, or what the other guy said could be right. Small connections make a difference in recruiting, especially when you are vying with the bigger names out there for a recruit.

He was simply wondering if they played at the same time. Why would you write what you wrote, it has nothing to do with what he said.

actually I prefer twocoach's version(hides under desk).

I like to think as ISU being one of the big boys that swoops in late on a recruit and is a serious threat to sign him.

Isu is not a blue blood but certainly i would think other teams see isu as a big boy with fred at the helm and definitely see us as a threat

Its nice to think that, but at some point we have to actually land one of these big recruits rather than just being in the top 5.

First you get the coach, then you get the style, then you get the trophies, then you get to the dance for 3 years straight, then you get to the Sweet 16 multiple times, then you get the recruits.

I don't know why so many people freak out about not landing all of the top HS talent we're after. Realistically "at some point" is like 10 years in to a tenure of a coach, not 5 years to land the 5 star guys. Fred has us punching above our weight right now in recruiting imo. We've got 4 top 100 guys that came to us straight out of HS on the team right now. That's fairly impressive to me and solid progress.

In this day and age there is some type of connection between virtually everyone in the sport. It's like six degrees of Kevin Bacon out there any more. Assistant coaches are usually brought in because of their ties to AAU programs, high schools or regional areas. I don't think it's that weird that ISU is in on an elite recruit that is still probably a year and a half away from committing. I would expect a Top 15 program to be in on these types of guys more and more. This shouldn't be seen as unusual any more.
