Here is a photo I have of Mack with his quarterbacks in 1981. 15 - Jon English, 18 - John Quinn, 6 - Alan Hood, 14 - Ted Meyer. I'm drawing a blank on the others except 13 might be Brian Nunez?? All my old programs are in the attic and I'm too lazy to go up there so if anyone can identify the others I'd appreciate it.
I've always rooted for Mack wherever he's been, he was a very friendly guy.

Funny, I never thought about that, so our coach coached at UT, and their coach coached at ISU.

I was a student back then, and met John Quinn at a party the night after we beat Iowa back in 82 (I think). He was a class act, now a federal agent in DM

I think John's dad was an FBI agent and that is what John always wanted to do.

is that astro turf?

Yes, ISU used to play on astro-turf. I think it was DMac that brought in the grass field. Back in the day they would not buy new turf so you could see where they sewed new patches of turf in, where the turf was bad, it was a very uneven surface and teams would complain about having to play on it in the mid 80's....

This was the original astroturf, I can't remember when it finally got replaced but I think it was under Walden. You could actually pull it up at the seams that ran east and west. And I think I had heard that players had on occasion actually been tripped by the seams popping up. I think the second turf was much better than the first. The second turf seemed to me to have more cushion, but that wouldn't have been hard to accomplish. And the rug burns were awful!!!

Does anyone remember those big-*** shoulder pads they used to put on "skill position" players back then?!!? I remember trying to catch passes above my head with pads like #15.....not easy to do at all.

Astroturf...my buddy would scab to his sheets at night and rip 'em off in the morning.

Under Duncan, the key players use to wear red helmets.....the logic behind this is a mystery to this day.
