This is indeed a fact. In the last 3 years, I 've gone with friends to Penn State, Mich., OSU and ISU games at Kinnick. Of the four, ISU generates the most buzz. It's not even close. To say otherwise is making stuff up.

There's only so much talent in college football, especially in the Midwest. It's no coincedence that Iowa is building while other 'traditional' powers like Notre Dame, Michigan, and Nebraska struggle. They get their ship righted and Iowa will find things tougher, both on the field and in recruiting. When that happens, Iowa City will appreciate the extra 100,000 people that come to town for the Iowa - Iowa State game compared to other home game days.

I agree with you some, but the 80's were part of those ND and Michigan glory years and during that decade Iowa finished in the top 20 seven times and in those seven years averaged over 8 wins. Also spend a decent amount of time in 1985 rated #1. I would guess Kinnick was sold out those years also.

I like finishing in the top 10, but the above is not exactly awful.

We looked at those games as automatic wins because for the most part they were up until that point.

As far as the other point, don't all teams hate to lose to their biggest rival? Or the counter...clone fans are ok with losing to Iowa?

Of course they hate it. But it's a little different when you expect to win and that expectation isn't met. For me... I guess I hate it even more.

I would hope there is a buzz...it is our big in-state rivalry game just like it is for you guys.

Based on what I have seen for the last 25 years while tailgating, walking to the stadium and attending Hawk home games, 99.9% of Hawk fans wear Hawk gear no matter the opponent.

I see where you're coming from. I think that if Iowa continues to recruit the type player that have found success in the program that they will be fine.

I don't think that there is a lot of overlap [i.e. Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame and Nebraska aren't in on a lot of the same recruits...].

That, of course, could change.

I think it will change. Nebraska is not going to get the same pull of recruits from Texas as they won't be playing them anymore. Nebby will look to go to areas where competition is recruiting so they can a) pull top recruits away from competition and b) pull second tier recruits that didn't make the Michigan or (insert Big 10 team here) squad and if playing at Nebraska can still play against Michigan where family can watch.

Not to mention the fact that recruiting in Big 10 territory is a lot easier for Nebraska than recruiting in a warmer climate. You will definitely see a change in recruiting.

Don't kid yourself, if Stanzi throws a couple INT's in a game and it costs Iowa a win this season Giggles will be the first to jump all over him. That's his game. Pick the hot team and ride them as far as they'll take him and when that team loses.......POUNCE! It's really pathetic radio but he's proven it before and will again. Giggles wants to go with the local teams to any big bowl game but he'll be right there along the way to make sure he's "the voice of reason" :chatterbox:

I am glad MP has his mind made up on this. You know the guy is never wrong and if it he is he will never admit it. I am also glad he is such a classy guy that he never responds to e-mails that give the other side of the story. Using the CBS 120:

Iowa gains more by beating #80 Syracuse, #83 Virginia or #91 Mississippi than it does by beating #77 isu. Similar teams but you get the East Coast or SEC exposure.

A loss kills you no matter who it is to out of that group...and actually a loss to isu might drop you more based on the perception of the schools involved.

Now a question... What is stopping Iowa from playing any of the teams you mention in addition to ISU? Why not just skip a Ball State type team, add your SEC or ACC team and call it good? Keep ISU, add Mississippi, beat them all and bask in the glory of the polls? None of the arguments you have presented so far have touched on this.

As you said, nobody outside of Iowa cares about ISU/Iowa, so it stands to reason it wouldn't be a bad thing for your Hawks to keep playing ISU for in-state bravado as well as beat some ACC or SEC team for the national prestige. Best of both worlds...

I think the bottom line is that you guys are looking for a team that is EASIER to beat than ISU AND gives you more prestige at the same time when you win. Now that ISU is no longer a gimme, you figure if you are going to go 50/50 on whether you win or not you want a bigger name to associate with that risk. I actually take that as a compliment to be honest. You are essentially saying ISU is equivilant to a middle of the pack SEC team. However, if I were to ask 10 random Hawk fans where they think ISU would finish in the SEC they would pretty much all say last. Interesting to say the least... I think that is what rankles ISU fans the most.

Anyway - I enjoy your takes.

I limited the comparisons to the isu game vs. what another team would bring to the table in its place. Mississippi would obviously be a much better game for us that EIU or Ball St for the same reasons.

That being said, no team (or at least very few) are going to play a non-conference schedule of EIU (one cream-puff) and then isu (Big 12), Zona (Pac 10) and Mississippi (SEC). I think Iowa could beat all those teams this year, but while other top 30 teams are playing 3 cream puffs and maybe 4...I just don't think any team would/should do the above (financial implications of 3 home and home series not even considered yet).

Like I have said, I like the isu series and would not get rid of it. I just wish clone fans would understand the idea that there are benefits to the Hwks playing someone else. In fact, once isu gets to where I think Rhodes will get them, the same philosophy would hold true where there are benefits to playing someone other than the Hawks for exposure and recruiting reasons.
