You should have taken this tone in your previous posts instead of taking the "Asking for a rational thought on this board might be a little tough" douce bag approach. No need for it.

I think you are missing a point here as well.

Pick a team, any team to replace Iowa State on Iowa's schedule. Unless it's Florida, Alabama, USC -- even Boise State or TCU at this moment -- Iowa is not going to get a "bump" in the polls by beating ANY team.

And Florida, Alabama or USC is NOT going to schedule Iowa because there is no incentive for those teams to play them. Those teams have the same feelings about Iowa (they don't matter) as Iowa feels about ISU.

I would also add that Iowa does not want to play ISU because it is a rivalry now. They don't want to take the risk of getting beat since ISU is now able to give them a game a regular basis.

It is unfortunate that Iowa has to wimp out like they seem to be. You want National recognition, play good teams. If they drop ISU they will not schedule anyone in the top 100 in D1. Hard to make a case when you play cupcakes.

I remember something an old coach once told me, "To be the best, you must first become the best."

Iowa won't do that. Dropping ISU would be silly and blow to the state. The unfortunate part is that would simply be to feed U of I's diluted self image that they are relavent on a national level.

You do realize the only reason Hawk fans "don't want this game anymore..." or "call it our super bowl..." is because it's become a rivalry again, and gosh-darnit, they just might lose!
They don't have the sure victory anymore. Back during their glory years, every Hawk fan and his dog was in favor of the game. But ever since ISU has turned things around here and there, you hear this crap.

You are definitely on to something there. Until 1998 I think that most Hawk fans looked at the ISU [and the Northwestern game] as an automatic "W".

That has changed and I believe that the 2 teams Iowa fans hate to lose to the most are The Cyclones and the Wildcats.

We looked at those games as automatic wins because for the most part they were up until that point.

As far as the other point, don't all teams hate to lose to their biggest rival? Or the counter...clone fans are ok with losing to Iowa?

The drop isu thing comes from the Big Ten going to more conference games...which limits your non-conference games obviously. Those non-conference games need to be home games that bring in money. The Hawks are not potentially dropping the game because they fear the clones. It is all about the big money world that college football has become.

Boy, it is good to know we have a new resident d-bag troll. 70+ posts 9 days into your first month on this board, the vast majority of which are demeaning to Iowa State and Iowa State fans...go away.

Not trying to flame you here or anything but what do you have to gain by playing EIU?

Iowa does not play EIU each year. There's a difference.

Somebody has to be on the schedule. Having said that, I think the Iowa/ISU game is great for the state.

Cyrocks - I really think you make great points but here is where I am coming from.

Iowa playing isu, played obviously in the state of Iowa, does not help get either team more well known to voters on the East Coast or in the SEC...places that pretty much control the polls. It also does not help either team recruit anything but Iowa.

A team like Syracuse, which has been on par with isu ranking-wise until last year, would give you exposure to East Coast voters and East Coast recruiting. Someone like Maryland in the ACC would get you out there also...maybe Kentucky or Mississippi get you into SEC country. Teams that are on par with the clones, but the game would help the program get "out there."

I have said it before...I would not get rid of this game (unless the Big Ten somewhat forces us to) because I think the good it does for the state outweighs the above. I do think that there is another side of this where there are benefits for both schools to play someone else.

I'd bounce that off your board mates 32, as many here have singled me out as being a Hawk fan who gets it (although some of those are waiting for me to tear my mask off and expose my tavern hawkness (which was funny stuff from whomever said it).

If you happened to read any of those 70 posts, I have not been demeaning in the slightest (ok maybe once with tazclone). Don't be so insecure - it is ok to post with those of a differing opinion.

An overly exagerated post.

The vast majority of posters on this board have nothing but good things to say about the Iowa football program. Some of their dirtball fans, not so much.

I would be willing to wager there is a lot more respect shown on this board towards the Iowa program than there are from the posters on Hawkeye Nation concerning the Iowa State program.

As is obvious...I do not like isu...but over the last few days I have come to like this board better than Hawkeye Nation. There is a lot more activity. Both boards have their DB posters who post nothing more well thought out than something along the lines of "you're stupid because you are a clone/Hawk" or "go back to your own board clone/Hawk fan" but that is to be expected.

...and you are right - I have been treated better here than HN posters would treat a clone fan over there (as MesaClone would surely attest to).

Thanks to a majority of you!

If/When Michigan and Notre Dame come back to power then Iowa will fall back to the pack and be a consistant 5-8 game winner. Then they will NEED the Iowa State game to drum up interest and money. There are alot of local and regional businesses that invest money in this rivalry to gain attention of both fan bases... They won't be as willing to throw money at an Iowa - Maryland match up.

How would Michigan and especially Notre Dame coming "back to power" make Iowa a 5-8 game winner? Also, would Iowa be a 5 game winner or an 8 game winner?

Iowa would not need Iowa State to drum up money. That's just goofy.

Wrong - Iowa's been threatening this for the better part of a decade, long before the Big 10 ever got serious about expansion outside of Notre Dame.

Everything goes in cycles. Iowa was in the gutter when Ferentz took over and then he built them up into a top 10 power from 2002-04. The 2005 implosion sparked a downturn for a few years and now they're back.

For financial reasons, not out of fear of the clones like many seem to think.

I used to know how the money breaks down for each school, but all I remember that it is financially better for isu than Iowa.

There's only so much talent in college football, especially in the Midwest. It's no coincedence that Iowa is building while other 'traditional' powers like Notre Dame, Michigan, and Nebraska struggle. They get their ship righted and Iowa will find things tougher, both on the field and in recruiting. When that happens, Iowa City will appreciate the extra 100,000 people that come to town for the Iowa - Iowa State game compared to other home game days.

What do I need to defend again? That this game means everything to you guys? Come on...I don't need to defend that - just look at this thread ... we'll pass 20 pages soon...over a comment I made that was right.

Don't let the hawk fans fool you either. There will be more of them flying their colors and in Iowa City this week than any other week on their schedule, including Ohio State... That's a fact

Come on Matt, you've yet to prove that the game is Iowa State's Super Bowl. How many times do fans have to say that there are other games that are just as important or more important on the schedule? Is the game important? YES! I grew up in Iowa. I have "friends" that are hawkeyes. My phone has been blowing up this week from arrogant, condescending, patronizing "friends" that are jacked up for the game. They are having parties, going to bars, and buying more hawkeye clothing to wear for this weeks game...just like Iowa State fans are doing.

Guess what, the game against Kansas State in Arrowhead is much, MUCH bigger for the football program. The game at home against nebraska is much, MUCH bigger for the football program.

There are thousands of Iowa State fans. Believe it or not there are even bandwagon Iowa State fans. Ask the right person and yes, you might bait them into saying it's their Super Bowl. Ask a fan of the football program and they'll tell you the Iowa State/iowa game is huge from an emotional standpoint but not the biggest game from a program standpoint.

"Na Na Na. You're wrong, I'm right!" I listened to Matt long enough to hear a Clone fan tell him that he wants to win ANY Big XII game more than against Iowa and Matt would not have any of that. Hard to convince somebody set in their mind like him. I think it was his "Cyclone Friend", you know you all have one, that said it. The one that is like a crack baby, shaking in anticipation of this one game. Probably because of all the crap he's taking off the guys around him.

Point taken though, ISU fans show up for Iowa better than most opponents. Might be because they were Hawks growing up, or they married somebody that's a hawk, and they live here, and we have had the game for a long time... you know, all that irrelevant stuff.

The superbowl comment is something that was so true until 1998. I'm sure it still is for some. I'm pretty sure that up until 2003, this was the way for Hawk fans.

Who cares though? He's right, we've argued about this stupid comment on a meaningless show for a couple days. And it will continue up until Saturday I'm sure. Granted most of this thread wasn't about Matt, it was just another thread to talk football, but some ******** had to bring him back in.
