Of course they don't enhance winning (unless you have Boise blue unis on their turf), but a recruit has never said, "Those matte black alternate helmets really made me take a look at another school."

New/Alternate uniforms provide fun for the kids, publicity for the athletic department, and hopefully some revenue in merchandise sales.

In the big picture it may marginally help, or I am sure you could "prove" it doesn't help at all, but it sure as hell doesnt hurt. I can't remember if it was you who brought up the budget issues, but if you really think the reason we aren't doing alternate uniforms is we cant afford them, that's very silly of you.

Uniforms are an afterthought when it comes to the kinds of money the athletic department deals with.

How much would two full sets of alternate uniforms cost (pants, jersey, helmets)?

Do you honestly think I have a figure? I have no idea. But if the cost of football uniforms is putting our AD in a bind, we have a lot bigger issues.

But since you want a number, I will say a 1 full uniform cost $500-$700 (honestly no idea), so we are talking probably less than $50K. In the grand scheme of things that is nothing. Even if it were twice that, 100K it wouldn't rattle any cages.

A couple box season ticket passes cover the charge.

I understand the broad spectrum of ages on this site, and each poster is entitled to their opinion.

However, the days of "old man football" are over. Critics will speak of top tier, football tradition rich academic schools sticking to classic uniforms, but when Michigan and Stanford and Notre Dame are rolling out gaudy, sparkly, "modern" uniforms, I think It's fair to say that times have changed. All you have to do is look at the free "swag" given to recruits when they attend camps and showcases. It's not uncommon to receive 2 free pairs of cleats, 2 pairs of socks, gloves, shirts, shorts, jockstraps, whatever. Kids are eating this up. All you have to do is look at their Twitters and Instagrams.

Kids today give a damn about how they look. That fact alone doesn't translate to on field success, but the "look good, play good" idea sure is appealing to 18-20 year olds. Non-Traditional Football programs like Indiana, KU, Oregon State, and Maryland are using these combos rebrand themselves to rejuvenate an otherwise stale football culture.

Nobody is saying that ISU should be the new Texas Tech, but some variety would be nice. Personally, I'd love to see ISU switch up the cardinal, white, and gold pants with cardinal, white, and gold jerseys/helmets. Not too drastic, but a good, fresh start nonetheless.

Besides, no one will be talking about uniforms when we consistently hit 8-9 wins a year.

I dont see how people cant realize that this absolutely helps in recruiting. Teams like Alabama dont need to do this but everyone that is not that top 10 program year in and year out will benefit from this. I cant think of a single reason not to have multiple alternates.
Kansas State apparently doesn't need them...

I just want a yellow helmet with two cardinal stripes down the center. IF they don't do that, then take the current helmet and put two yellow stripes down the center.

That's all I would like to have done with the helmets. Uni's are just fine.

Since you were claiming that alternate uniform expense was insignificant, I assumed that you had some knowledge of uniform costs. My bad.

It's not about putting the AD in a bind, it's about spending money on things that will improve winning.

Just my opinion...If the AD has an extra $50-100K rolling around to spend on the FB program, a much better investment would be adding that money to one of the assistant coaching position salaries and going out and getting an assistant who has proven experience developing QBs at the BCS level.

Unless you are going to contend that alternate uniforms will get a 5* QB prospect to Ames.

Does anyone here consider that alternate uniforms are more for the fans than the players? I hear everyone talk about it as thought it's a recruiting advantage. I don't believe that as much as a figure they have in their head that says, spend $100K on new uniforms, earn $300K in profits from the sale of new jerseys to fans. If the ISU AD feels we could make money on new or alternate uniforms, we'll see it. If it were truly a recruiting thing, we'd have done it already.

I agree about the jack trice uniforms. i bet they are waiting to unload those on us and we will go crazy eating it up. jack trice needs to be the first throwback/alternate uniforms we get. great story great uniform and we will buy the **** outta them at the bookstore. it is really disheartening to see KU get these , though, while we make excuses.
Yes on the Jack Trice uniforms... and this year (October 8th to be exact) marks the 90th anniversary of his tragic death. And guess who we play, at home, on national tv, on the date closest to the anniversary... Texas! Now's the time to unveil Jack Trice throwbacks!

I'm not saying it will bring a 5* QB to Ames, but will your superior assistant bring him to Ames? Hard to pinpoint if this 50K brings us extra wins. That seems like a little too in depth for me. Its jersey's for crying out loud.

I agree with roadhoused on this. Mixing it up a couple games every couple of years is not a bad thing. A little extra buzz would be great. Take the Texas game for instance, national tv, players pumped to wear the new digs, get to show them off for our biggest spotlight game of the year. I love the idea of the JackTricethrowbacks, could even get a segment on ESPN explaining the backstory while showing the alternate jerseys. I think it would be genius. Just my opinion
AND... this year marks the 90th anniversary of Jack Trice's tragic death, on October 8th. So the nationally televised home game versus Texas on October 3rd makes huge sense for the unveiling of the Jack Trice throwback uniform!

A superior assistant may or may not get a 5* QB to Ames, but that's not the point. A superior assistant would hopefully be well-equipped to develop the 2* and 3* QBs that ISU historically gets into a middle tier (or better) Big 12 QB, something that ISU has not had for quite some time.

I dont think the point is that anyone "needs" them. I think this is a generation thing. I guess when we start recruiting 50 year olds we can say "hey we only have one set of uniform combos unlike all the other teams". But recruiting 18 year olds, we can say "hey check out all this cool stuff we have".

There is no argument. Those who say no are just flat out wrong.

I agree with you on everything you said here. This is veering quite far from the topic though.

Having some sort of alternate jersey is a good thing for Iowa State. It will not hurt our budget or ability to intrigue coaches that we desire. The alternate jersey would increase publicity, merchandise sales, and maybe give Iowa State a national story or two (ESPN doing an article or something).

It is honestly a no risk decision. Now if JP and the football staff decide they don't want to for whatever reason, then fine. But arguing about budget, etc is pointless.

And sell the uniforms after.

I will buy one for $500. Guaranteed.

I think KU just needs SOMETHING to get their fans/players excited.
