I would almost think that the staff would HAVE to give Zeb a big chance to earn it, regardless. Not just hand it to Kyle, even tho you'd guess he'd be the frontrunner. Otherwise Zeb might look elsewhere. Want them both back of course!

Even if it is handed to Kyle I don't think Zeb would look elsewhere. He would still be set up for starting his final 2 years.

This doesn't need to turn into a crap on Kyle fest. I hope he gets it, and if he can beat out Zeb in the spring and summer, then start him. If he can't, then we have a more than qualified back up.
Exactly. Competition is never a bad thing. You also never know what can change between Spring and September, giving a guy an entire off season of first-team coaching and practices (this also applies equally to Noland).

This. His limitations have been discussed ad nauseum. The bottom line is that the staff trusts him to pilot the offense and the players in the locker room respect him as a leader. If he gets another year then he should get first crack at the starting job, and if Zeb or whoever outplays him and takes it then so be it.

I fear we'll find out quickly how much Lazard bailed Kempt out.

I kind of don't like this. As it stands, Kempt will walk away a legend, but if you're honest about it, he's pretty limited and a whole off-season is going to help other teams figure him out. Besides that, during the bowl game, his accuracy really decreased and Lazard made a bunch of spectacular catches that got us out of a jam and inflated Kempt's stats.

I'd hate to see him come back, struggle, get benched, and see the legend of Kyle Kempt go out in that fashion.

Of course, maybe an extra year will help work some of those kinks out and he'll be better than ever. I guess, at the end of the day, I trust the staff on this.

I know they said his shoulder was healthy for the bowl game but I can't help but wonder if he was really 100%. Some of those throws looked like stuff my son and I chuck back and forth in the yard.

While I agree with what you're saying about his legacy, at the end of the day I feel better about our overall QB situation next season with him around than I do without him. It will make for a strong competition in spring practice and fall camp and that's good for all involved. When the rubber hits the road, the bolded is what really counts.

Makes you wonder if that offer that went to that HS QB yesterday wasn't just in case Kempt is denied.
Kempt will slide into the scholarship Jacob Park left. They will take a QB in 2018 if Kempt gets a sixth year or not. I bet this staff takes a high school QB every single year.

Actually you could look at it as a positive sign regarding Kempt's status and the staff didn't need to look for a grad transfer

He’s already signed. His name is Re-Al Mitchell and of course they’ll take a high school QB every year. Every school should/does.

Not everything is about arm strength. A lot of QBs with cannons aren't very good QBs. You also have to me a good decision maker, be a good leader, etc. I think some people are far too critical of Kempt. I think it is the stigma of being a walk on. Park had HS accolades. Noland had a ton of hype coming in. Name me the QBs in ISU history that won that many Big 12 games in a season, or that beat the caliber of teams he did.

I agree that Kyle doesn't have the greatest arm. The wounded ducks he was throwing in the bowl game looked terrible. Zebs throws look better. However, anyone who doesn't want Kempt back if possible just because they want Zeb to start is just crazy. Having two guys that have played winning football is invaluable.

Also, the staff isn't bringing Kempt back for a 6th year to have him sit on the bench. They want him back to he can be the starter.

If Zeb can learn to play smart, like Kyle, in the off-season I would prefer he start.

Why does everything Kyle Kempt have to turn into a Kempt vs. Zeb arguement thread? I would say there is no guarantee on who would be the starter, but after the way last year went down, how can anyone not be for having another experienced QB on the roster? Can we save the "Who should start" for at lease when we know weather or not he gets the year? I mean it would be best to see how things go in actual practices before we start it, but I know that won't happen.

Hell, if I'm KK, I think I'd prefer to be the 2nd string QB. At least as it pertains to this board. We all know how many people on here love to tote the 2nd stringer as the guy who should be starting.

1. Until I see it, I won’t believe any decision is coming soon.

2. If Kyle gets another season, he’d have a whole off season to prepare with zeb to be the starter. Don’t discount that.
