Thanks. He was in one of my Spring Quarter classes which he always started but didn't finish because he would drop it when Spring Practice would start. The players only needed to keep their grade point up to stay eligible; progression requirements were not set-up yet.

Overall, felt great to go on the road and never really feel worried (a first play TD certainly helped).

Seems Kolar is "back" and his ability to pluck the ball out of the air and be in the right spot was super helpful.

I don't have the stats up so I may be wrong, but seemed we played a relatively clean game in terms of penalties (false starts, etc).

Our punting is trash and will cost us more games. Every other part of the team was solid and the game never felt competitive (in a good way.)

Was watching the first quarter again. Right after Mevis' first field goal I noticed that Campbell was talking to the umpire. Rus was just called for a false start which made 4th and 1 into 4th and 6 prompting Campbell to pull the offense and send out the FG unit. I replayed the false start play again and you can see the guy directly across from Rus bark out which should be flagged as simulating a snap count. That is why Rus flinched. It should have been a 5 yard penalty for simulating a snap count which would have kept the drive going. Of course the know-it-all color guy goes on a diatribe about how ISU should scrap all of the pre-snap motion because of it.

That is a penalty which doesn't get called nearly as often as the defense knowingly commits it. Having the umpire back by the referee rather than behind the linebackers probably makes it more difficult to catch as well since they are a lot farther away from the infraction.

I love that! :D Experience is often under-rated!
I mean I will readily admit that I am on the downhill side of life but I wasn't going to ISU games in 1962. I never made Clyde Williams field (except as a rec area while at ISU).

and I thought that saying was clever too . . . .

Recieving team can elect to move you back 5 and rekick tho. And if you kick ob again, they can take it at the 40 or move you back 5 and rekick again. Its not a bad idea but if the other side wants a return then can get it. Gotta kick it thru the endzone, period.
People talking of punts; not kickoffs

Sat in row 11, pregame atmosphere was off the charts. You’ve got to experience the Harley D on-field parade to feel the juice. Hall’s TD on play 1 took the air out of the ballon. Chase Allen’s coverage of the on-side kick was pivotal. O-line played well, D was good but Cats moved the ball in the 2nd half. Mevis gets game ball for end zone kicks, K-St returners are elite. Had a feeling from the crowd of the Osborn Hangover which Nebraska fans have gone through. After the long success that Snyder provided it is hard to keep that going. Lots of young talent seeing significant on field time now. Did I mention Noel….. Big thanks to the K State fans for the hospitality, a class act all the way!!!
Absolutely. AND, btw that KSU on sides kick was the best design and execution I have ever seen.

Not mentioned here is the INT that was missed late in the EZ. On the next play they make 6. Your D works all nite and then miss a layup that would have put the game away.

There are so many details for special teams, to be "elite" we need a coach that works with them on those things. Our "hands team" acted as if they had to allow the on-side kick to go 10 yards before they tried to grab it. Coach them better! Teach our punter how to use that backspin so your punt that hits at the 5 stops there. Teach your punt team to run to where your punt goes and down it before the touchback occurs. Don't run to the punt returner who is faking you out. Catch every punt so the opponent doesn't get a 20 yard roll.

Special teams affect so much of the game, we have to give them better attention and better coaching.
Agree that ST need more priority than is being given. I disagree with your saying the above. The moment you " go to grab the ball", KSU is going to smack you and the ball is going to squirt loose. It is not like you have a free grab. It is was a great kick and a dicey situation.

Run defense in particular was frustrating. K-State has good RBs to their credit, but it was annoying to see us get gashed so badly. Their backup RB averaged something like 7 ypc. Our pass defense was solid through 3 quarters, the final stats don't tell the whole story as I think we went ultra-conservative in the 4th Qtr and were OK with Thompson picking apart our zone little by little.

Tons of good about this game, especially for the offense moving forward. There really isn't a defense in the Big 12 that I fear moving forward after Okie State this weekend.

Like I said, our lineman are extremely poor at finding and reacting to the ball. It's not even like they try to shed the blockers and can't, they don't even react when the RB runs right by them. It's basically up to our linebackers to fill the gaps and make every tackle. If and when they don't it turns into a problem.

Finding the football is run defense 101.

Our defensive system is based on gap assignments, so the DL in fact are not told to go find the ball, but rather to take up space, same with the LBs. The safeties are responsible for going to find the ball, hence the term "spill & kill" which has been used to describe our D

Im pretty sure it's been reported that ST was worked on heavily during the bye week. At this point the punting is what it is. I'm sure if there was a better option the staff would go with it. Mevis has been a great upgrade in kickoffs and FGs. Hopefully we can get a better punter in this off-season.

I understand their primary function and mentioned so in my post. With that said they need to display awareness of where the football is and react appropriately. There are several teams (college and pros) that run some sort of a gap system but I've never seen one where the lineman appear incapable of disrupting a play in their vicinity.

Haven’t made it to rewatching the KSU game I’m three quarters into the KU game and have been impressed the d-line making plays in the stretch run game. Ewazurike bringing down the running back with a single arm on one play.
