Kalscheur looks to be a good player

This is the nice thing about the advanced stats. They generally do a better job lining up with the intuition of what you saw (e.g., Hunter and Brockington were awesome, Jones was the best big man, Grill was trying to shoot us out of the game, etc.) than mere counting stats. Kalscheur was fourth in scoring but not the fourth-best player.

He's an undersized DeAndre Kane -- creative around the rim and deadly in transition. He's also an excellent rebounder for a guard. Seems to be in the paint quite a lot. He's just not a tall or as strong as Kane was.
Pretty good comp, but he seems like a much-better mid-range shooter than Kane. Whereas, Kane may have been a better 3-point shooter. Of course, he didn't shoot many mid-rangers...

Kane had a three-point line that was closer to the hoop than Brockington, to be fair.

I think the lid on the basket for ISU 3 pointers was getting to him.

I know a W is a W and winning while shooting 1/20 from three against anybody speaks well of the team's heart and ability to grind out wins in other ways (e.g., defense, paint touches, fast breaks, etc.) but...

...man...

If they shoot like that against a Big 12 or other high-major team, they're roadkill -- Xavier, Iowa, and Creighton included.

The three Torvik game scores so far are...

57
93
35

These can change as more data comes in, but the squad played like a Top 25 team well above the bubble against Oregon State. The other two? Well, much more in line with the 2-22 team we enjoyed last season.

Hopefully they know how to turn it on/off against good teams and/or just play well all the time.

GK may still be the best player, but need more games to tell.

As I once learned from an OG contributor on another unrelated internet forum: "more data, less wank."

Time for a thread bumpity-bump?

Really hope GK can find his stroke and figure out some kind of offensive production vs liability. I seem to recall Matt Thomas struggling through an extended slump from long range in his early days with the program. You could tell the skill was there, just lacking a little success which snowballed into the confidence factor.

I'm past thinking there is a stroke to recover. He hasn't shot well since I saw him as a freshman here in Mpls playing for the Gophers. Announcers keep talking like he's shot great every year and this something new or an "acute" problem like a good shooter that is just going to shoot his way out of a slump. He's leading the team in 3-point attempts and shouldn't be taking that many shooting 23%. Hunter also, at 20%, jacking up almost as many.

I think GB is a hustler and plays pretty good defense. That being said, if one checks his career stats he’s performed much as he has this year. He’s a career 35% shooter. His 3pt % is down to 22% but shooting percentage, A/TO and rebounding are at the career level. I’m of the school of thought that his defense and experience will cause him to be a net positive, at least I hope.
He’s a poor shooter and turns it over a lot. That’s it.

It’s a slump in the sense he’s a not good shooter that’s limited on offense currently playing horrifically. But I don’t think it’s much like Thomas just missing a few shots at an anomalous rate

Gabe doesn’t look like a good shooter. His form is all over the place. He’s airballling and hitting the side of the backboard.

Can he be closer to 30% from the point on? Maybe. Will he always be horrible on offense? Probably not. But underclassman Gabe seems unlikely. Certainly Memphis Gabe is an extreme outlier

Keep in mind the last two games have been against two of the top defenses in college basketball. TTech was very impressive, especially in the first half. ISU has had 36 turnovers the last two games, 18 last night, GK had 3 of those turnovers in 27 min. The team shot very poorly for the second straight game. Looking back how did we even win last night? GK is part of the reason why. He hustles every minute on the court, especially on D. He has stepped out of bounds 3 times the last two games, but really not unforced. It was against great defenses. He's 6'4" 200 lbs who can not be bullied, just what Otz wants. Who is going to replace him? In my opinion he is not leaving he starting line-up.

Of course the entire team has not shot well and committed 36 turnovers the last two games, against maybe the two best defenses in college basketball.

I'll say that I think Wednesday night was a small step forward for him. He hit a 3, had a nice reverse layup, didn't turn the ball over quite as much. Still not great, but not awful like against Baylor. He needs to get more consistent with his form and then be a little stronger with the ball. Who knows if that's possible.

Gabe has struggled, but I think everyone has (offensively at least) due to the competition we've faced. Our ball movement has slowed down the past few games, but that was also against two REALLY active defenses.

IMO, Gabe needs to get the ball with space, not trapped along the sideline. He doesn't have good enough handles to navigate high pressure and traps. I also thought he was too slow when moving the ball from low in his stance to higher up for a shot or pass.

I'd like to see quicker ball rotation (WITH SOME DAMN BACK CUTS!) to give some of these guys space to move. I think Gabe would definitely benefit from an extra second or two of space so he can either shoot or drive. He's become predictable and that's dangerous against a solid defense.

He's clearly pressing too much right now. I hope he gets things ironed out. We need him to be an option as the conference season continues.
