haha same thing i was thinking, doesnt matter to me because A) i already made the switch to gmail 2 years ago and had webmail forwarded to me and B) i graduated in may haha

WebMail freaking blows. They were planning to do the switch over to gmail over spring break last year and obviously THAT never happened. :skeptical:

Use Outlook or some other email client. Webmail is convenient when on the road but to use it as your main email client is asinine.

Just be happy that they aren't still using telnet. Webmail is great compared to that.

Saying "Webmail is down" is like saying a Hawkeye getting picked up crashing a parking gate is better than a Hawkeye getting arrested for stealing credit cards...

it may not be a severe but it's still bad

I think that students are getting gmail starting with the fall semester. Maybe the reason why webmail is down?

God I hope WebMail is dying it's death right now. WebCT also sucks, but getting rid of WebMail is at least a start.

Yeah.. I could've swore I read a ISU Daily article about people getting the option starting this summer to begin switching to gmail (whilst keeping their ISU e-mail address, of course... I already did the other switch to gmail)

Hopefully that actually happens, although I haven't seen ANYTHING advertising such an option.

I guess I don't understand the advantage to switch to gmail. Anyone can get a free gmail account already and register that free account as your main email address at ISU. Will gmail be administrating your iastate.edu account or will it be a gmail.com account?

I think someone told me it'd stay iastate.edu. I'm guessing some of why they'd keep it that way is usernames. Some will be iastate, some gmail, etc. and you could have overlaps.

Outsourcing the e-mail keeps Iowa State from having to have the servers and maintenance to maintain the program. Outsourcing costs money, but if the servers/maintenance cost more, it will help. If it costs a little more to outsource, you still get rid of the headaches.

They have a system called Google Apps where they manage email for your domain. The domain can be anything assuming the domain owner sets up the DNS. So you could be on a Gmail system using an iastate.edu email. Should save ISU some money, better uptime, and more space for users. There is also Docs, Calendar, and other stuff.

WebCT seems way to much like facebook for class... profs might as well just get facebook and give us assignments that way.
