The comparison between ISU and Iowa is completely apples and orange. The comparison for ISU is our Big12 brethren. Also, only looking at offense is one-sided. Quality of defense is equally key.

Yep, those numbers would be ok in the Big ten west, but not in the Big 12. Too many good offenses in the Big12 and average to poor defense.

Bingo.
Here's a comparable look at Big 10 West team DEFENSIVELY:
NCAA Rank: 12th total defense (out of 127)
OFF TDs Allowed: 10
YDS/play: 4.37
YDS/game: 294

ISU NCAA Rank: 113th total defense (out of 127)
OFF TDs Allowed: 30
YDS/play: 6.19
YDS/game:? 465

The Big 10 team btw is Iowa.
So why are we talking about the OC all friggin week? Why isn't Uncle Wally's head on block instead of Mangino?

I honestly wished we ran the same type of offense Stanford ran. I understand high scoring game are more fun to watch, but we won't be able to play that way at Iowa State.

I understand we don't have the players to run it right now, but how about we go after stanford's OC and their O line coach. I bet we can recruit some Iowa farm boys and beef them up to be huge line men.

We can slow down the baylors and TCU of the world and make them play the game our way. Low scoring and make sure we have the ball last.

I kinda like it when we can run it down their throats and you can see their DL tire and gasp and our OL getting their chests out... Love the punishment aspect of a power scheme.

It is very nearly the case that Iowa State is the best offense Iowa has faced this year. Here are the scoring offense ranks for Iowa's opponents:

Iowa State: #83
Pittsburgh: #82
North Texas: #124
Wisconsin: #86
Illinois: #84
Northwestern: #108

It doesn't get much more difficult:
Maryland: #90
Indiana: #41
Minnesota: #110
Purdue: #102
Nebraska: #52

Average scoring offense rank: #86

Iowa State is the 2nd best scoring offense, best rushing offense, and 2nd best passing offense Iowa has faced so far.

Mercy - ISU's offense is the 2nd best Iowa has faced so far.

ISU's opponents' national rankings based upon yards/game:
(1) Baylor, (2) TCU, (5) Texas Tech, (24) Toledo, (61) Iowa, (102) KU

Iowa's:
(40) Wisconsin, (59) ISU, (89) NW, (88) IL, (99) Pitt, (111) N Texas

ISU's opponents' national rankings based upon points/game:
(1) Baylor, (2) Texas Tech, (4) TCU, (36) Toledo, (48) Iowa, (121) KU

Iowa's:
(82) Pitt, (83) ISU, (84) IL, (86) Wisconsin, (108) NW, (124) N Texas

Remaining schedule for ISU:
Yards/game: (21) OU, (32) OK St, (67) WV, (110) UT, (126) KSU
Pts/game: (7) OU, (11) OK St, (29) WV, (81) KSU, (95) UT

Remaining schedule for Iowa:
Yards/game: (14) IU, (23) Nebby, (98) Maryland, (107) Minny, (108) Purdue
Pts/game: (47) IU, (52) Nebby), (101) Purdue, (106) Maryland, (110) Minny

But don't forget, the murderer's row of offenses Iowa has yet to face will go down in offensive numbers once the vaunted Iowa defense gets a chance to play them & shut them down!

Iowa doesn't have better players on offense than ISU does. They just have an identity and system in place. We don't.

Hopefully the Lanning, power spread offense, is our identity going forward and we can use the talent we have.[/QUOTE

agree 100%

We were an offense away from beating Iowa. They played more composed, and put more pressure on the QB in the second hal. We couldn't handle it.

If Lanning is in, and runing a power offense do we win? I don't know, but a QB running would have loosened them up.

Why do you care? If Wally is so bad I'd think you would want ISU to keep him to help pad the mediocre offensive stats that the Hawks have.

And yet you were still tied with lowly Iowa State until 2:14 left in the 4th quarter...should tell you something right there.

Oh no am I not allowed to care? You missed my point entirely.

I was simply saying the focus this week has been on Mangino and the offense. Generally speaking the offense has been decent with emergence of Warren and now hopefully Lanning coming in. We just can't score enough points with too many empty possessions.

The point is we give up way too many yards per play and points. That's a defensive mindset. I'd love to see Uncle Wally go and get an *** kicker for defensive coordinator. Would be fun to see ISU be bully's for change. I just don't think its possible with a guy who hit his peak in the early 90s with FSU.

And for the record ISUs juggernaut offense is averaging 1 whole yard per game more then Iowas "mediocre offense".

Again we have kept the opponent below their average points in all but one game. You have to understand we are a very high scoring conference with several gunslinger qbs. Our defense point total will always be high in the b12. It is on the offense to fill the gap.

Agree 100% on this. Iowa's QB (forget name) isn't some sort of physical specimen, and neither are their specialists...there's a basic knowledge of roles, and the lines on both sides are very fundamental so they can play off of that without being predictable/inconsistent.

I think KSU is a similar situation (usually). It's interesting that ISU's coaches haven't figured out how doing little things can play big when there's a gap in resources compared to other programs.
