CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team earned an eighth-place finish at the 2011 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. The team placed eighth despite entering as an unseeded team. The Cyclones went 2-3 for the tournament with victories over Northern Illinois and American in the UNI Dome.

The Cyclones fell to familiar foe Boise State 25-13 for the second time Sunday, the same score by which Boise State prevailed on Saturday.

The teams we lost to are better teams right now," Jackson said. "We are a .500 team right now. It is a long season and we held out some guys because we have so much coming up."

I'm not upset at this, we got beat by Boise State twice and Okie State once.

Both are in the top 10 in the country.

Kinda wish we had the opportunity to go up against some more teams in our ability range. With OSU getting upset, that's just a tough draw in consolations.

Going into the National Duals, one poll had OSU at #2 and BSU at #3 (although their performances at the Duals indicate that those rankings may be high, at least for a dual format). We did beat American, which was ranked #7 in one poll.

Usually we are one of the teams that others don't want to face, but the shoe is on the other foot this year. Our (young) team needs to wrestle the best if they expect to become the best. I'm glad so many strong teams came to the National Duals, scardy-cat Iowa notwithstanding.

The way Va Tech wrestled this weekend, that might not have been much prettier. With Drouin out, Carr not making weight and whatever Ward had going on, we weren't going to beat many teams on Sunday. The win over American was a good one to build on going into the teeth of the schedule. Until we can get back to the point where we can expect to compete with everybody, we'll have to enjoy the "small victories" like Sorenson and Simonson's peformances and look forward to better days.
