I enjoy listening to true crime podcasts and like ones that go in depth on a single case at a times. A couple go state by state doing cases so I've heard a few Iowa ones. Among then are the following:

Small Town Murder

Rick Forsyth's rampage in Norwalk in 90's

Shawn Bentler in Bonaparte in 06 crazy case where his daughters got the family inheritance

James Klindt in Davenport in 80's
who cut up wife with a chainsaw and put her in the Mississippi and only ended up serving 20 years

Murder in America

Vasillica Murders, Gitchie Manitou and Breasia Terrell in 2020

Michelle Martinko both United States of Murder and Killer Cases on Hulu

United States of Murder
Cari Farver
Amy Mullis
Gitchie Manitou

Unspeakable:
Noah Crooks

Mom's and Mysteries
Jodi Huisentruit

These I haven't listened to yet
Malvern Manor
Cory Wienke

Curious to hear people from areas where these happened (outside of Vaslliica and Jodi these were all new to me when I heard them) and any Iowa cases that are out there that others have come by on other true crime podcasts.

I love Small Town Murder. I've sent them a few suggestions of cases to look into, but haven't had any responses. Regardless, James and Jimmy make me laugh while also feeding that true crime interest.

I live in Norwalk and Forsythes defense was he didn'remember doing it since he shot himself in the head and basically the way he was after the shooting he would never do something like that. It was his pre shooting self that did that. That was either his defense or his appeal defense. Like ummm no bro.

I originally found James who did a podcast with his wife where they crapped on rom coms then found crime in sports and now getting into small town murder. They are hilarious, they tour and are doing Minneapolis and Kansas City this year. I wonder if they would ever come to Des Moines.

The podcast basically said he was a total psycho. He would sit outside his wife's house and just stalk them.

I recall watching a case on tv once where some teen girl went missing from a mall in Cedar Rapids in the 70's and went unsolved for a long time. Then DNA came along and there was a family of 3 or 4 brothers, and one of them matched. They went into his place of business in rural Iowa and busted him on hidden camera. He was overweight, early 60s and thought he had gotten away with it. Anyone remember it? I don't recall any of the names in the case.

The Klindt case was a huge item of local interest. Seemed like it took a very long time to put the pieces (sorry, bad choice of word there) together to pin this one on him. As I recall he was fairly thorough in his commitment of the crime and disposal of the body.

It was a long time ago, so I would like to listen to this to refresh my memory of the details.

I had no idea he was released from prison. Wow!

Saw TV, the iceman of Iowa. Dustin honken and Angela Johnson murders. Both killed, Dustin was executed but apparently the death sentence is cruel and unusual for a woman, even if you kill kids.

I think this is what you mean:

It's a hell of a thing how they caught the guy.

In 2018, the DNA phenotyping company took the data they had collected the year before and entered it into GEDmatch, a public genealogy website. GEDmatch returned one person who shared DNA markers with the suspect in Martinko's murder, and it determined her to be likely the killer's second cousin once removed.

The company created a family tree starting with four sets of the woman's great-great-grandparents and reported that the killer was most likely descended from one of those couples.

An investigator with the Cedar Rapids police department contacted DNA-tested members of two of the branches of the family tree, and eliminated those branches as containing the killer. He then contacted a member of a third branch, and a DNA test determined that they were first cousins with the killer.[2]

That narrowed the suspects down to a set of three brothers, who had grown up in Manchester, Iowa.[3] The brothers were placed under surveillance, and investigators began to attempt to collect their DNA secretly.[2]

On October 29, 2018, an investigator observed one of the brothers, Jerry Lynn Burns, drink multiple sodas using a plastic straw. When Burns disposed of the straw, the investigator collected it and tested it for DNA. Tests eliminated the other two brothers as suspects, but the DNA from Burns' straw matched the blood found on Martinko's clothing.

This a Iowa forensic files case I saw about Christina Sanoubane. Neighbor took her life and emptied hamburger buns to take the knife home but left his footprint in the bun.

I was into Small Town Murder several years ago. If I remember, there was one up in Forest City.

Small Town Murder is great. I’m not a true crime buff, but I’m a geography nerd so I enjoy the story behind the towns and James & Jimmie are a hilarious pair.

That Forest City episode is wild. One of the few unsolved murders they’ve done.

The David Moffit Grimes murder of a man while he was in bed while his fiancé slept next to him is a WILD story. One of the craziest Datelines I’ve seen.

Can’t believe there hasn’t been a dateline or in-depth doc on the Ashley Okland murder. You don’t hear anything about it any more.
