We want to lose our land line, but we like and use Qwest DSL.

I called to cancel our phone and to keep our DSL. Not possible they said, you have to be a phone subscriber to receive DSL. I am assuming you have to have MediaCom cable for their Internet Service.

Does anyone know if there is an ISP that doesn't require another service to tag along with Internet access?

Preference is DSL service over and AirCard or Cable.

You can get DSL from qwest w/o a phone line, they just charge you something like $10 a month more for the service. Same thing with mediacom you can get internet through them w/o cable they just charge you $10 a month more for the service. Basically you don't get the bundle discount.

I've never had DSL so this isn't from experience, but I always heard you could have Qwest DSL without a phone line, they called in 'Naked DSL' or something like that.

Yeah, naked DSL is the correct term for DSL without a phone line. I can't speak for Qwest as I live in AT&T territory, but I know AT&T will let you do it.

I've got Qwest DSL and no landline. My account is still tied to a phone number, but I don't pay for phone service.

I have Mediacom without cable television (DirecTV here). They jack the rate though. I pay 62.50/month (or I should say my employer does)

You do not have to have Mediacom cable to get Mediacom internet. They will charge you $5 more though.

Both of these are the correct answer.

I signed up for Qwest a month ago and pay $5 extra a month for a naked line. There is still a phone number attached to it as well.

I don't have DSL, but my understanding from those who have tried it is that they (Qwest in this case) are very reluctant to hand out DSL only service. Further confusing the matter: Qwest's customer service is often confused by the term "land line" because they take it to mean that you want DSL without a physical connection to your home. Of course, you and I know that DSL ALWAYS requires a physical "land line" to the phone, you just don't want telephone services through that line.

For "isuno1fan"
I use Comcast Cable for my internet. I was also being charged 62.50 a month for Internet Only connection. By signing up for the most basic of the basic television packages (local stations, local city council meetings, Cspan and the shopping networks...) I was able to reduce the monthly bill to $58.50. I'm not sure what Comcast and the other cable companies do with that $20 a month overcharge that you pay for using their Internet Only service. Unfortunately the cost of Hughesnet equipment and service is just as expensive. I'd do the satellite internet in a second if it were only $5 less a month than cable.

I just use Qwest DSL with local phone only and that seemed like the best deal to me.

+1

I think a local number is $10 (?) a month, so a net of $5 more than naked.

Also, I thought I remember that if you drop the phone line they disconnect you for a week or something between your "old" service and your "new" service--anyone have any experience w/ this? Heard it was discourage the drop, but they legally had to offer DSL w/out a phone line or something.

Plus I think you can get another $5 discount if you have Directv. I haven't tried this yet because I don't want to mess with my bills.

Honestly sometimes sales reps don't know anything, but only because they are told the wrong information. My buddy got a smart phone w/o a data package which the sales rep said was impossible only because managers tell them to sell the data packages so hard.
