Lazard had a GAME (against Memphis and others) that was better than the CAREERS of some of the kids that went in rounds 5-7 (particularly off the top of my head the guy from TAMU and LSU)

Just mind blowing. Oh well... hope its a giant chip on shoulder - do us proud son.

Unfortunately the guys from A$M and LSU have been on radars since they signed from high school. Lazard was a 4 star but he was from Iowa and went to ISU. If he had gone to Notre Dame he would have gotten a lot more attention than he did.

Cambell will just have to keep building the program so that it's not a surprise that good players come out of ISU.

Edit: After further consideration, I'm probably just grumpy about what went down and hopefully this is just a situation where Lazard got the shaft and not a statement on the status of ISU football.

I don't think it comes down to that. There are players from ISU in the league. I think his agent was terrible at selling his upside.

I think he can definitely have a career, because of how hard he works and his talent, but I don't think being at ISU and having 3 out of 4 losing seasons helped his stock any.

I love ISU, but Rhoads did a terrible job of getting talent into the program and as a result into the league.

There have been comments in this and other threads about how if Lazard had played at ND instead of Iowa State, he would’ve gotten drafted (all other career numbers being equal, I assume).

I'm skeptical that it's purely an Iowa State Thing. Example: Affiliation with historically bad programs didn’t seem to hurt here:

Round 4, #132 (Ravens)
Jaleel Scott, New Mexico State (6-5, 215)
Outlook: “Tall, lanky wideout with the ability to make ridiculous catches outside his frame … good, not great long speed. Decent wiggle in space.”

---> Note similarities with Lazard in that summary (in addition to size).

I happened to be watching when some guy named Russell Gage from LSU was picked. Dude played 4 years and had a total of 26 catches for 347 yards. For a four year career. 6 foot, 184 pounds, 26 catches in a career and he goes ahead of Lazard. Just bizarre.

St. Brown’s production decreased drastically when Kizer left and Wimbush became the guy. That probably was why he dropped to sixth round and would not have helped Lazard any either.

The NFL helping destroying ISU football program in that they are saying to recruits, no matter how good you are at that school called ISU, we WON'T draft you. So recruits will always look elsewhere first, so screw the NFL. Hakeem Butler, Montgomery, Lima and Bailey better start playing like beasts because nothing is given at this moment if you are an ISU player.

I don't think that's the case at all. Plenty of prospects got selected from traditionally bad or off the map programs - Turay from Rutgers was one of the first edge pass rushers off the board. And on the flip side, lots of guys from traditional powers went undrafted - the best JT Barrett could manage was a tryout invitation.

I don't know why Lazard didn't get his name called. It sucks for him because he deserved his moment there. But I doubt it had anything to do with the program he played for.

I continue to believe that if you aren't going to get drafted in the first three rounds, you are almost better off being UFA because you control the process. I know hearing your name called is what everybody wants, but signing money at the bottom of the draft is miniscule, and picks are often just flyers taken by teams because a scout is adamant about a player, or they will find guys with a local angle or interesting background to stock the practice squad. If you want to see the field, pick the team that needs what you have to offer and go win a roster spot.

I have zero concern that AL will fail to make an NFL team, and play on Sunday. He's a pro, they just don't know it yet.

Yeah, I agree with this. I think the reason we're so shocked is that we're Iowa State fans so we have cardinal glasses on and forget this happens to everyone. There's a reddit thread from the college football community where people are talking about who they're surprised didn't get drafted. A lot of really good players from big programs didn't get drafted.

I hope you realize how tin-foil-hat like this sounds. Dudes from Wyoming and UTSA went in the first round. There were picks from Louisiana Layfette, Rutgers, Central Arkansas, Yale and Wagner picked. There was a dude who doesn't even play football drafted. This isn't some kind of low exposure deal. It's not a conspiracy against Iowa State deal. It's just an odd thing that happened, I'm sure due to a multitude of circumstances lining up just right.
