Here's the breakdown:

Out-of-State Tuition & Fees: $22,256 (+$275 increase this accedemic year for Fall)
Housing & Meals $8,762 (Turns out, that this is short for meal plan by nearly $1,000)
Books & Supplies $994
Transportation $900
Other Additional Education Costs $2,030
_________________________________
$34,942 (closer to $36,000+) Total per year

Granted I was in state, but man in 2000 when I started my tuition was like 1500. That's just breathtaking.

Yes, I know.

I was kidding so that I could post this video of Cake's Jolene...
but thanks, Buzz Killington.

Which is a completely 100% different song. Not even a cover.

I've always heard that states like Illinois and Minnesota have blocked reciprocity with Iowa because they think too many of their in-state students already come here.

If it is already cheaper or similar in cost to come to Iowa's state schools and they are getting the students from these states already there is no incentive for Iowa toward reciprocity either. Why take students who are coming anyway and reduce their contribution toward your bottom line?

Iowa State offers some scholarships for out of state students that are automatic based on class rank, GPA, test scores, and AP classes. In my son's case, it lowered the tuition to a point that Iowa State was similar to in state costs at Purdue and IU for him.

I graduated in 1999. I'm embarrassed to admit I don't even know how much the costs were then. I applied for student loans, paid tuition, paid for loans, wrote my last check when I was 27. Worked 20 hrs/week on campus for three of the four years.

Looking at some of the numbers I'm seeing here, I feel like I got lucky.
