Vesuvius Wood-Fired Pizza was new in 2010 on the west side of Duff just north of 30 and gone in 2013. Expensive, small portions though good. The change overs are so fast (especially on Duff) now I am sure many of these places barely get a rep then close That stretch now has a Chicago pizza place, Wu-Hot and more.

Vesuvius just closed late last year, so it made it a bit longer than you say. Couldn't compete with Blaze (and maybe Smoking Oak) on price imo.

Gonna show my age here and point out that:

1. It was O'Malley & McGee's.
2. Hombres was in the old motel that got torn down where they built the firestation at the intersection of Airport Rd and Duff.

EDIT: oh and I celebrated my 21st birthday at Dugan's Deli watching the Sundogs play and getting WONDERFULLY hammered

I see a lot of Thumbs Up?? Is that Thumbs? Never heard of it as anything else.

No. Thumbs Up was on Welch.

Thumbs still exists on West.

I love these things...

1. Does anyone remember LandEx? It was like a file sharing system you had access to if your internet was through ISU. Somebody had the top 100 one hit wonders. My roommate downloaded that and it was the sound track to our freshman year in Birch Dana.

2. We went to wings to go (later west cyde wings) like the second day it was open. Reason was, I was walking home from class to our house on Hunt St. We always cut through that parking lot South of friley and that little us bank atm station. I believe that is now like a bus station? Anyway, a young lady had car trouble and was late for work. I gave her a ride. She was training at wings to go before it opened. Told me about the concept. A few of our group wasn't 21. We show up, and she didn't check ID's because of my favor. We went their like 5 Fridays in a row at 4 pm until she quit. Awesome stuff.

3. When I was a freshman, an older friend from my hometown used to buy me beer. I often would pick him up from Big Shots during FAC. That is now still outlaws I think? Anyway that thing had like 3 different names until outlaws stuck.

4. We spent a lot of time at Chasers for FAC. Beer pong and silver strike bowling. Not many attractive ladies but during FAC you didn't care. Would occasionally have food too.

5. Somebody mentioned sergeant peppers. I liked that place too. Phuel was in that location previous to peppers. That was the easiest bar to get into with a fake. Mickey's you had no shot. I never really loved mickey's like everyone else. Except for karaoke and when it was nice out the little deck thing.

6. Old Es Tas. Spent a lot if time their in summer. Unique shots and tacos. Awesome vibe. Always the first bar of the night. Also, on busy nights the taco stand outside was money.

7. Club 8 where Es Tas is now. Dumpy but big.

8. Club Element was cool when it opened but went down hill over time. Athlete hang out. That was the site of Jason Berrymans strike 3. Strike 2 ($4 and a cellphone) was right near Stanton Heights when I lived there.

9. Sips used to have $4 drink buffet or any coin any drink. But you always tipped wait staff. Basically a quarter for 4 8 of draft beers or week wells. Bathrooms were atrocious. Used to do bottle service there cheap because we knew management. Easy way to attract women. Also jersey shore meat heads but whatever .

10. Keg shop Fire Sale. Old milwaukee steel reserve. Remember Bud E? As in bud energy drink? Spark, etc. Be at times of my life banging through kegs for our hunt street parties. Call ahead, they'd have it sitting outside.

11. Already mentioned but how about the dude that ran cocost. He always took the orders and barkec them in the microphone. BROCCOLI BEEF!!

12. MoJazz. Only place easier than Phuel to get into. Which is exactly why it kept closing. That place has been like 7 different things since. I think my favorite version was the bootlegging theme. Can't remember the name used.

13. My friends who lived on the east side by Fareway uses to frequent the swift stop Jerry Gair held up.

14. 1.50 Busch light drafts at dangerous curves. Only place you could get a beer in reasonable time during VEISHEA.

15. Litzels lumber. Purchased my loft there.

16. Cyclone Liquor still by East Hy Vee?

17. MU ISU dining the "hearth stone."

18. Linden dining hall. Cheese quesadillas on Tuesday.

19. The HUB lunch specials. Heard that is way revamped now.

20. Old student tailgating. I only experienced it in HS. Directly east of stadium.

21. Bowling Alley where I think Auto Zone is now?

22. Dominoes on Hayward.

23. T Galaxy.

24. Blimpie by Keg Shop.

25. Hollywood Video.

26. Almost Always Open Gas Station.

I'm spent. Good night.

I miss a lot of the places listed. I've lived in Ames since the mid-90's and have seen a lot of places come and go. But on the bright side, I think retail and restaurants in Ames in general are probably the best they have ever been quantity and quality wise. We still have some catching up to do with comparable towns but the gap isn't so wide.

The movie theater upgrades have been nice. I think Menard's is finally set to open. If we could just get a damn Costco I'd hardly ever have to leave town to shop.

Not sure if it was the same place, but a record store just east of Welch would rent records for $1.00 for a day. One guy would rent a record, and we'd all record it.
I believe that was Music Factory

Nobody has mentioned Co-op Tapes and Records. I liked to reward myself on a Friday afternoon by scouring their cut-out/bargain bin for something new to listen to. Still have a lot of the vinyl I got there.

Was this on Welch kinda by where Stomping Grounds Cafe is now? There was a record store in that building back in 1990 when I went there, but I can't remember the name of it? Spent a lot of money in there.

2. Hombre's was where Johnny's was at which used to be a hotel where Best Buy and the small strip mall is at. There was motel where the Ford dealer is currently at a buddy from college parent's ran it. There was the Silver Saddle motel were Old Chicago is currently at.
