Thought you guys would like to read this:

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pg=38&u_sid=2227491

The horn blared Sunday on training camp at Nebraska, an 18-day stretch that included little time for anything other than football at the opening of a season filled with expectations new to the Bill Callahan coaching era.

NU closed camp with a 90-minute practice in front of about 4,000 college students at Memorial Stadium. It was a festive atmosphere, complete with loud music, touchdown passes and cheerleaders.

Kind of like many days the Huskers hope to enjoy over the next four months.
"I think we're progressing well," Callahan said. "We're on schedule. We're on track."

Nonetheless, here are a few semi-educated observations:

• Sophomore I-back Marlon Lucky took the first set of snaps with the top offensive unit. The former marquee recruit remains mired in a four-man battle for playing time with Cody Glenn, Kenny Wilson and Brandon Jackson.

All four backs played with the No. 1 offense, but Lucky's role appeared the most versatile of the group.

• The Huskers have a deep receiving corps. Nate Swift, Terrence Nunn, Todd Peterson, Frantz Hardy and Maurice Purify all played regularly with the first-team offense.

Purify's presence here is intriguing. The 6-foot-4 newcomer glides on his routes and displayed a knack for finding the end zone.

• As strong as the receivers appear, the secondary might be equally shaky. Depth is a concern at cornerback, where a season-ending knee injury to Zack Bowman has sent the Huskers scrambling for help.

Top newcomer Andre Jones was limited Sunday in his work at cornerback because of a hamstring injury. Converted receives Isaiah Fluellen and Tyrell Spain practiced Sunday with the top two units, as did Titus Brothers and Bryan Wilson.

"How ready are they?" Callahan said. "I don't know, when you have a situation like this, that they're ever fully ready. They're still developing and getting better."

• Senior Matt Herian ran comfortably and found open seams in the secondary. Herian, a two-time All-Big 12 tight end, hasn't played in a game since suffering a broken leg in October 2004. Junior Justin Tomerlin looks like the Huskers' No. 2 receiving option among the tight ends.

BTW, Jones' hammy is nothing more than a sore one, after sitting out a day or two, he's been cleared to return to practice.

Why would youthink we are interested in this?

Because 1 - it's a conference opponent and 2 - you're expected to compete with Nebraska for the Big 12 North title.

I cann't get enough news & information from conference rivals. Guess, you guys live in an ivory tower or something

I'd be willing to bet if I posted information on the Husker boards about ISU's preseason camps, I'd get the same apathetic response.

Actually, worse. Did something like this last year...completely innocent. Was flamed into a burnt crisp.

I've been on Husker boards and have seen fans from other teams do this, but thing of it is, I posted this information in your Big 12 forum. If I'd posted this on your ISU football forum, then by all means flame away, but what's the purpose of having a Big 12 forum if you're not willing to welcome news and information from conference rivals?

He's just trying to be helpful, so don't skewer him. However, AirWalke is correct. If we tried to do something like this, the Shucker fans would go ballistic.

Actually, the main Husker board I particpated in, you'd be welcomed. Big Red Board (my primary Husker message board HQ's) has a very cordal (sp?) Texas fan who's already been invited to our tailgate the day of the Texass game.

Was I over the top when I first outed myself as a Husker fan? Probably, but i've since asked for a fresh start and apologized to this message board.

No problem, don't worry about it. I think most people here are cool with you. I'm just saying I'd bet we'd catch some flak from somebody over there if we did the same thing. I'm not saying you shouldn't post this stuff. I actually stood up for you.

Who cares what other boards would do? Let's be better as Cyclone fans and thank him for the information. I appreciate input like this and it is the reason that Jeremy set up the people who are doing in depth research on the teams prior to our meeting. I for one love to see how other teams are developing in the Big XII and to anticipate the matchups.

You are welcome at our tailgate in Ames also Garn!!!

I appreciate your contribution to the message board garn...

As do I. It's always interesting to read what other teams are up to--especially your competition. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer! :)

Oh, and you're welcome to party with me anytime!

Garn is providing useful info and he is right that our main competition is Big Red. If I read the writeup properly, the defensive secondary replacements are still learning and are having problem with the great receivers in camp. Therefore, the rubber will meet the road in the first few games on how good everything is really going.

We do need info from outside fans - ot allows a balanced discussion unlike the woodie approach.

I agree with garn, if we aren't going to accept some friendly information from a fan of the team we need it the most from, then we might as well call ourselves hawkeye report.

So who will the Big Red starting runner be: Kenny Wilson, Marlon Lucky, Brandon Jackson, or Cody Glen? No Cory Ross. My pick is Cody Glenn top start.
