Huggins might be in trouble, DUI is good, Bees are bad

Most WVU fans loved the man, hated his coaching style.

I think the new AD will get someone who has an offensive mindset, like Beilein did.

WVU hoops was so much fun to watch when Beilein was the coach. back door cuts, picks setting up open look 3's, guys who shot 90 percent from the line.....

It's too bad Beilein's son, who was good at WVU as a player, self destructed in his first head coaching gig. I always thought P. Beilein would make a good coach, but he couldnt keep his zipper zipped.

BIG difference between being physical and just flat out fouling all the time.

Our guys arent coached to commit constant fouls and just two-hand shove guys when the shot goes up. Huggys entire coaching strategy is we will commit 60 fouls, get called for 30, but goad you into committing 30 fouls and getting called for 30. Thus you end up playing their game and losing because theyre better at it.

Ive heard huggy is super good to his players, just really a father figure that legit cares. He can be open and frank and funny in interviews. And i respect that. But i hate tf out of his coaching strategy which is a total abomination.

If i was the judge, id give him a suspended sentence and probation for the OWI, but sentence him to 10 years of watching high scoring free flowing NBA games

And then you add the fact that Huggins would generally be all over the refs the entire game about those fouls- and would often get his way! While yes, many on our own side would like TJ to be more active with the refs, Huggins could get to the opposite extreme.

I'm no prude, but when you're 69 years old and already on a short leash because of your public homophobic slurs, and then you go out and get **** faced drunk before you jump behind the steering wheel, you've got some pretty serious issues going on. I'd say he needs some help.

It's too bad. I always kind of liked him because he seemed like a no nonsense guy who never made excuses.
I'm not gonna hit the guy when he's down. He finally made the right choice here. Hopefully he can get some help.

Purely from a BB pov, I'm glad he's gone. I never liked HuggyBall. Too aggressive, too many fouls, many not called, and he would get away with it.

Please explain the differences between ISU under Otz and Huggins? We don't press much like he sometimes did but otherwise we play a very physical, ugly to watch brand. Its coaches adapting to the roster they have and trying to leverage less talented players. You can't criticize Huggins brand without criticizing the brand we've played under Otz.
I think the reason is TJ did it out of necessity while rebuilding the roster. Huggins did it out of preference and actively recruits players to play that style.

But I do agree with you, TJ and Huggys style has been pretty much identical over the past 2 years, and people want to pretend it’s not. Hopefully this ISU team is a little more free flowing.
I suppose there are similarities. I would probably agree more with this if I didn't have my cyclone colored glasses. I just don't see the brand of HuggyBall with Otz. At all. He (TJ) doesn't teach intentional fouling. He isn't constantly working the refs. His players seem more controlled and respectful of the game. There are clear differences between HuggBall and the OtzBall at ISU.

The coach of the Mountaineers
Had a few too many beers
And then ol' Coach Huggy
Hopped into the ol' buggy
A tire then blew
And he did the Mark Few
Having also derided gays
He'll be toast within days
Don't mean to boast
But Huggy's now toast

I'll bet Beilein comes in for 2-3 years to get the next guy ready. They always really wanted Joe Mazulla to come home but then he ended up with the Celtics job that blew that all up.
This is going to be a random timing thing because it’s decently likely that mazulla will be fired next season. If they did a one year interim that could work but otherwise if they don’t get him I can see that program taking a dramatic nosedive especially with the competition they have to face.

Funny to read online articles and comments wondering aloud what drove him to this. This has been his lifestyle for years.

Except he's had numerous seasons being ranked between 55th and 105th in Adjusted Defense. TJ has 2 straight Top 10 finishes.

We play good defense, they foul the entire game.
We ranked 322nd in the nation last year with 19.2 fouls per game. Auburn was the only P6 team who averaged more fouls per game than us

It's even worse when you factor in tempo. Per possession ISU was 346 fouling on 28.3% of possessions, the worst P6 team. Not only did ISU foul a ton they also played one of the slowest paces in the country. Aesthetically 2 of the worst things you could ask for in a basketball team.

Real Huggy Ball imo was Press Virginia when they'd throw guys out there to guard full court and iirc their offense was pretty fast paced.

'Otzelball' hopefully will change with the make up of the team. Playing Hoiball with the rosters of the last two years would have been a whole different kind of ugly, haha.

Maybe they Mountaineers will hire Frank Martin as Huggin's was his mentor and Martin coaches a lot like him too with all the yelling and screaming at refs althought he doesn't sit on a stool doing it.

I think Martin has lost his sparkle. WVA will move on from Huggins, including his protégé, Martin.
