When I'm in the fast lane I usually drive the same speed as the guy to my right. If I manage to crawl past him, I like to speed up until I get to next car and repeat the process.

I also enjoy merging at the very last moment before road construction lane closures and then driving about 10 mph under the speed limit.

And if it looks like you just cleaned your car, I enjoy driving in front of you and turning my windshield wiper fluid on for 5 to 10 seconds before veering onto shoulder into the gravel and dust.

I almost didn't see the sarcasm through my rage that was building. I hate the construction thing. It's like people don't realize that if everyone would just merge immediately when they can when they see the sign, you'd never be stopped at a standstill in those situations.

Have to take 35 everyday for work this summer. Usually around 10 over. Faster in the morning than after work. Also depends on the pack I'm in.

Highway I usually stick around 60. Highway 20 (since I take this all the time from Sioux City to I35 when traveling between school and home) I try to stick to 8 over. Generally though I just go pretty well over the limit until I find a vehicle that's traveling at my desired speed so that I can sit behind them and (hopefully) let them get the ticket if we meet a cop.

Generally, I'm 1-5 mph over. On road trips, though, I'm usually at or under the speed limit, because with my Nissan Altima if I'm careful I can get 34+ mpg by going speed limit (even though it sucks going 55 mph around Chicago - but that's where I make most of my mileage). And gas saved = money saved > the few extra minutes gained by driving over the speed limit.

This doesn't make sense to me. Wouldn't you want more cars going your speed to lessen the odds that the cop picks you out to pull over? I love it when you can get a big pack together and put the hammer down.

OK, I drive about 5 over most of the time, so 'lessen the odds of getting pulled over' doesn't apply for me, but I'll drive way faster than usual to get away from a pack rather than stay in one. It's Iowa, there is no need to be within 15 car lengths of another car for any length of time in most cases, unless you're driving thru one of the metros. Plus, you don't know what moron in your pack is on the phone, or hasn't been sleeping, etc., so pack driving is much more accident prone. I hate when people try to hang with me so they don't get the ticket, I'll f'ing slow down to 50 until someone passes me if they're going to play the game of "I'll just ride right behind this guy even though there's no other cars on the road so I don't get the ticket."

This (except I'm more in the 7-10 over range). What's odd is how many times that car that eventually passes me has a Texas plate.

Depends on how late I leave Ames for work to Des Moines... going with the traffic can sometimes mean going 85 since most people on the road are late together

And everybody knows that the safest speed is the speed of traffic!

I always thought that the higher the speed limit, the less lenient troopers were going to be.

I have the same opinion, except for school zones. And I'm more than fine with cops ticketing people speeding around kids. Wherever you're going, an extra 20 seconds won't matter

Actually, it's a much better traffic flow and better utilization of the available lanes if drivers would use both lanes up to the closed/merging point, then "zipper" together. When all the traffic moves over at the first "Lane Closed Ahead" sign, you end up with miles of wasted space in the unused lane, and slower traffic in the merged lane.

Now, that's the cold, hard scientific explanation. In real life, you can never get the majority of drivers to go along with this ... and you get the long line of early mergers sitting in one lane, with the occasional speed demon doosh that flies past in the left lane and then makes everybody stop so he can merge in.

Even though I know rationally it makes more sense to use both lanes, in a practical sense I end up merging early along with the majority of traffic, then fuming at those guys who "skip ahead" in the line. Zippering is the better way, but only if everybody is doing it. And everybody is most definitely not.

Agreed, I hit the posted school zone speed and am definitely more aware of what's going on. Although some of those school areas get pretty hectic with parents darting in and out.

I was wonder this the other day. Now that we have such great technology, why don't they install digital signs and soup up lights depending on the time of day.

The traffic limit on I80 going through Omaha is 55, but it could just be that during rush hours. It should be raised to 65 during the day (like 10-3), and 75 from 9pm-5am.

if you live around Des Moines and don't say around 80 you are a liar and you know it.

I had a guy flash his lights at me once when he came up behind me really fast. He could have waited 5 more seconds for me to pass the driver in the left lane and there wouldn't have been a problem. Instead he got the finger and I went the same speed as the car passing me. The moral of the story is don't be a **** and flash your lights at someone you want to get over

True.

I'm just thankful for the truckers that will pull their semi into both lanes so those d-bags can't pass them and try to zoom up to the front.

I used to drive 80 on the interstate, but after picking up another speeding ticket in December (my second in 7 months), I've since dropped down to 60 on all highways. I'll never get a speeding ticket doing that, and with the tight funds I operate on, the 15mpg difference between 80 and 60 is huge.

Here is what I've learned from this thread

#1 Our driving education in this country is horrible.

#2 People are just ******* stupid.
