I have found Cyclone fans (as a general rule) to be among the most fickle and certainly amongst the least loyal of any fan base I have ever seen.

If there is so much loyalty, where were the sellout crowds at Jack Trice when Mac was in the hunt for Big 12 North football titles? I specifically remember walking up to JT on a 65 degree November evening a number of years ago when Colorado came to town with Iowa State very much in contention for a strong finish in the North (I'm a college football fan and wanted to see a good college football game on an incredible November evening) and not only getting in the stadium, but actually moving to the lower section at after halftime. Even during Iowa's struggles the past few years, fans were still pouring into Kinnick on Saturday afternoons.

Where was the loyalty when Dan McCarney was getting thrown under the bus after leading Iowa State to some of its most successful football seasons in the school's history?

Where was the loyalty (at the very least, to the players) when McDermott was going through his struggles and you could hear a pin drop at Hilton?

And where will the loyalty be if Fred Hoiberg doesn't get the job done in Ames? Legitimate question!

Are you serious?? Iowa State fans are one of the most loyal fans ever. We cheer for every team (even if they are struggling). Look at Iowa, they only support football. Have you ever been to away womens bball? mens bball? mens football? Do you know how many people show up to those? It really makes me mad when you don't really know what you are talking about and start dissing what we love. Why can't you just enjoy our great news instead of talking about possible failure? What's the point of discussing what if he fails? Do you always worry about what if you fail something in your life? Is that how you live? T I live in Lawrence, Kansas and I go to EVERY Iowa State matches when they come in town (even tennis and softball). You call us NOT loyal fans? Are you really an Iowa State fan? Seriously? Give me a break.... I am not the only one that goes to those games.... because I know MANY others who does the same thing.

Sorry pal, this ******* retard isn't talking about the "tornado" game. I'm talking about the Iowa State - Colorado game in 2001. No, Iowa State wasn't going to win the Big 12 North that season, but they had a very, very competitive football team and played a Colorado team that was nationally ranked straight up until early in the fourth quarter. It was a very good football game and there was no excuse for the stadium not being filled to capacity on that 65 degree day. It wasn't even close to capacity.

You guys can refer to me as a troll all you want to, but the last time I checked, someone who has been a member of CF for nearly two years and has hundreds of posts isn't a troll. As a matter of fact, I probably have more right to post on a Cyclone board than a lot of people who frequent CF as my wife and I have thousands of dollars invested in getting a child through the University when many posters here have never set foot on campus nor paid a dime toward an education at the University. I have a lot of respect for ISU as an outstanding institution and attend Iowa State football and basketball games (actually more women's games than men's) whenever I can.

I have no problem whatsoever with Iowa State (in fact, I very much enjoy seeing Iowa State have success as it is the alma mater of one of my kids), but the hate so many Iowa State fans show for anything that isn't cardinal and gold has always astounded me. And the way they turn on coaches, including Cael Sanderson, has always perplexed me. I maintain the fan base is incredibly fickle and certainly has not supported the athletic programs when it needed them the most.

I asked a simple question, and I think it's a valid one - how will Iowa State fans react if Hoiberg doesn't achieve success in Ames. Will they turn on him and call for his head? Unfortunately, I believe they will.

Look, I share your feeling that this is a risky hire. Fred will either coach at ISU for 20 years and be successful or end up getting fired by likely a new AD. And that won't be pretty. BUT, I don't know that you can questions ISU fans' loyalty. First off, there just flat out aren't that many of us. It's not like Nebraska where the whole state has one team to root for. Second, there has not been a history of success in FB. In the 80's and 90's, people mainly came for the tailgating. So, we're a long way from FB games being an event that people "have" to attend like in Lincoln and IC. We're getting there, but to take a game from 9 years ago as an example? I think that is making a leap that is unjustified. ISU had pretty good attendance this year in MBB despite a fairly bad product. ISU has had decent attendance in FB despite having some awful teams and no tradition. Do ISU fans turn on their unsuccessful coaches? Sure, but no more than any other school. I remember Nebraska fans turning on Solich and donors having to buy up thousands of tickets to keep a sell-out streak intact. And Nebraska Basketball? No one cares enough to turn on their coach. Half the fans take off the red and put on the blue during the winter.

Giving McCarney 12 years and GMac five (he was going to get five) years shows that the fanbase is more than patient.

Wingback, you're an ignorant Husker.

ISU fans are not loyal?

We haven't been good at basketball in a long time, yet we still build our hopes every season and still have good crowds show up (compared to most other schools in a similar situation).

We've never had great football success, yet we still have pretty good attendance considering we usually suck and we are the #2 football school in the state.

Loyalty to Dan McCarney? Dan McCarney was one of the best things to happen to ISU football, just about any real Cyclone fan will tell you that. He made us relevant. But he wasn't making us great, and it was apparent he may never do so. Thus we went looking for more.

Loyalty to McDermott? A coach who was here for 4 seasons and never had a winning season? 90% of fans were still on board with McDermott coming in to this past season. You can't judge ISU fans for losing support for a coach who had done little to give us hope for the future after this past season. Hell, even some of those fans were ready to support McDermott again after he was going to hire Nurse and Grayer, and got commitments from Godfrey and McKnight.

Iowa State fans will react in 4 years if we are terrible the way true fans who are loyal to their school would do. Ask for change instead of just giving up and accepting patheticism.

Even if Bill Self or Coach K fails, people will turn on them and call for their heads. I dont understand the point of this question? Isnt that kind of common sense?
You cant question my loyalty to Iowa State. My family invested over 18 years to Iowa State.

How do Iowa State fans react if four years from now Cyclone basketball under Hoiberg isn't faring much if any better than it was under the McDermott regime? What if ISU still isn't being invited to the dance? Or if Iowa State is still among the lower tier of teams in the Big 12? How will you react?

I know I will get crucified for saying this, but I will anyway. Having moved to central Iowa a dozen years ago, I have found Cyclone fans (as a general rule) to be among the most fickle and certainly amongst the least loyal of any fan base I have ever seen.

With Fred Hoiberg being among the most revered of all former Iowa State players, regardless of sport, if he fails to bring the program to where you want it to be, do you turn on him? Personally, I think once again this shows the immense failure of Jamie Pollard. I'm afraid Pollard has once again painted himself into a corner. If Hoiberg fails, fans will most likely turn on him and one of Iowa State's best will leave Ames with a tarnished reputation.

It's a tough, tough situation. If I were Hoiberg, I would stay put, keep my reputation in place, and let someone else get crucified in Ames.
If you dont play, you cannot win.

While I can't read Husker Troll's drivel, I will ask this: How would Nebraska fans react if they lost to Iowa State at Memorial Stadium?

Oh, that's right. The "Greatest Fans in College Football" booed their own team.

ISU fans don't always have great attendance because A) it's a smaller fan base, and B) some people put things like job and family ahead of attending sporting events. I know that's a shocking thought to a Nebraskan, but it's reality.

Hawk fans weren't filling Kinnick just a couple years ago. Sure, the University said they were, but there were plenty of empty seats. Prior to Hayden Fry, I remember my grandpa talking about going to Kinnick and having run of the place with about 10K in the place.

ISU was miserable for 2 decades in the 80's and 90's. How many fan bases would fill the stadium for 20 years of crap? I guarantee that if that happened to Nebraska, Memorial would be a wasteland. And I mean 20 years of actual crap. 3 win seasons. Not 20 years of lower tier bowls.
