They want RIM as well. Curious to see if that ever happens. RIM is gonna tank, so it seems right.

They had to. They need some mobile patents to fight Microsoft and Apple.

I am pretty sure this was the driving force as well. I have to imagine this will really improve on what motorola is offering in phones and tablets too. Might even begin to see a Motorola chromebook.

My guess is that Google doesn't want to become a major competitor of HTC and all the other companies making android phones. Buying Motorola really is about the patents. My guess is that they spin off the company pretty quickly once they sort through all the patents and paperwork. They still hold onto the patents and make money from licensing, but aren't put in a position of being in direct competition with the manufacturers who use their software.

What i hope they do is force manufacturers to follow by example in some areas. Software updates for instance.
