looking to get wife golf lessons in the des moines area for Christmas..... Who do you reccomend? Also we live a ways from des moines, how do golf lessons usually work? hour long sessions 1 a week for couple weeks? buy a set number of lessons and redeem whenever? Itd be great if we could do them this late winter indoors but I dont think that option exists since the dome is gone.

I did a lesson with this guy just to see how it would go, and he gave me (and my son) some really good tips. Probably should have continued to go, but the essence of what he told me was that my swing is almost completely wrong mechanically, and I'm too damned old to change.

If I were to do it again, I'd probably guess that it would take a course of 8-10 lessons to really get a consistent thing going from it.

i would get lessons from a club pro closest to your house. if you are just starting out there aren't big differences between what the local guy and top pro will teach you.

i would recommend going as often as possible with a minimum of 8 sessions. once a week is fine. once a week plus a session at the driving range on the weekend is better.

i got one small tip from my dad on my swing, practiced it a few times, and went from 120 to about 105 strokes per round. Got another tip from a golf pro and went down to about 95 strokes. Small tips help at the level we play at. The key, like everything else, is to practice.

Are you North, or South of Des Moines? If you are South I highly recommend Rob Randall https://thelegacygolfclub.com/product/private-lesson-pga-pro-rob-randall/
He works at The Legacy in Norwalk and has a heated bay with video instruction. I think he has a winter program where you meet with a physical trainer, as well as him. It's a little pricey but guys at my club swear by it. I bought my wife a group lesson that was 10 lessons and 5 rounds at Legacy. She really liked him and had never played golf in her life. So he works with all levels of skill.

If you are North, I recommend Tom Tays through Otter Creek. Although I don't think he has a winter facility. He works with my son and works on your swing, doesn't try to change it. http://www.pga.com/professionals/thomas-g-tays-pga

Jon Ward at Golf Galaxy would be my next choice. He's very technical.

I should mention, my wife is not a beginner. She just wants to improve. She out drives most guys I know and has driven greens at 300 yards before from lady tees. She struggles with irons and putting.

Ahh sorry for the assumptions :)

I'd do with some of the other suggestions in that case.

I highly recommend Lori Gaffney at Glen Oaks. My 13 year did lessons with her this fall, and she's now beating my wife. She is expensive, but well worth it. My wife and have already said we're taking lessons from her next spring.

Yes, Mark Egly is a great teacher of the game. I'd highly recommend him. He owns and teaches from his golf range - The Des Moines Driving Range, NW 66th Avenue.
