I doubt you guys are in the same HOA but where did that come from?
I have always hugely disliked Russell Crowe. He's apparently a huge prick in real life and doesn't seem to have any moral boundaries, especially when it comes to other people's wives. He's the main cause of the breakup of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, whom he used and promptly threw away when he got bored. And they're not the only couple he's done that to. Yes, I know it takes two to tango, but the common denominator in all these infidelities is Crowe.

As if my expectations weren’t through the roof already.

I don't trust Ridley Scott's judgement about his own movies.

Scott and George Lucas are similar in that way --

They seem not to understand their own films as they made them decades ago. Or at least they don't understand how their audiences came to understand them and cherish them.

Maybe it will but he's got a long way to go to beat stuff like...

Alien
Blade Runner
Thelma & Louise
Gladiator
Black Hawk Down
Kingdom of Heaven

...especially considered his most recent, Napoleon, was a total dud.

He has a widely known rep.

I prefer this well-respected documentary of his inclination towards violence:

I think it's somewhat similar to video games. Many of the big budget ones get enthralled by the way everything looks rather than how it feels while playing/watching it.

It was 100% in there just because it says "blood stains the colosseum doors."

I'd like to think it won't be in the actual movie, although I didn't hate its usage in the trailer.
There was actually a trailer for the original Gladiator that had a Kid Rock song in it.

Throwing some action scenes with a song that is not in the movie probably happens a fair amount.

That trailer is way better than the last. I was going to see it regardless, but I feel a bit better about it now. I think the ships in the arena with sharks is a bit Dr. Evilesque, but whatever.

I think it looks awesome. I've probably seen the first one 30 or 40 times, but not in a long time. Will have to revisit it.

Picking bits:
1. Why Gladiator II where it seems to have no connection to the original other than it containing gladiators? Why not just make it a standalone movie?

2. I feel like I just watched the entire plot line in that trailer. That wasn’t a teaser, that was a synopsis.

The historical Romans had naval battles in arenas like the Coliseum --

That part didn't bother me. That part looked cool. Some of the goofy CGI bothered me, though. Having watched the original again, it greatly benefits from its commitment to practical effects.

I felt worse after the second trailer compared to the first trailer.

1.) The only returning character I've seen so far was Connie Nielsen. I think Derek Jacobi (the Senator in the original one) might be making a return, but he's 85 so probably a cameo at most.

2.) You hit on what has me concerned all the sudden. It is a new cast and mostly new characters, sure, but I fear it is going to be a complete rehash of the original in terms of the plot.

"Same plot but bigger and badder effects!" can work (see Mad Max: Fury Road compared to The Road Warrior, though that's a shallow comparison) but usually produces at best a "meh" sequel.

Whats with the bits in the middle where she's saying "Luscious, take your fathers strength, his name was Maximus." Is the main character Luscious (the kid) from the first one? Was he Maximus' son?

Edit: I googled it:

Yes, Gladiator II is based on the idea that Lucius is the son of Maximus:

  • Plot
The sequel's plot centers on the secret son of Maximus, played by Russell Crowe in the first film, being Lucius, played by Paul Mescal.

  • Revelation
In the trailer, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) reveals the news to Lucius as he prepares for battle in the Colosseum.
So its a sequel.....

Djimon Honsou is also returning. He played the Nubian (I think) who befriended Maximus, and had the last lines in the original as he buried the small wooden family gods that belonged to Maximus in the arena where he died: "And now we are free. I will see you again... but not yet... Not yet!"

This is the kind of movie that makes a guy want to go out and beat his hands bloody against a concrete wall.

Black Hawk Down is an excellent movie. Especially if you are old enough to remember that incident and watching the aftermath on the news.
Its excellent even if you weren't but like war films. It just has the problem every war film in the 90s had. Tom Sizemore.

While I think this is still just a big cash grab, after watching the trailer, I believe this will be worth seeing. Pascal, Washington, and Mescal all look like they are going to act well above the level of the film. Probably going to go see this.
