Given what we're all assuming with Dekkers, who do you want to start at QB?

Feel like we should wait for Rocco to actually do something on the field before we worry about him transferring.
I don't like when ANY QB transfers out. It signals to me that they are sour about not getting to play and would rather take a me first approach and try to start over somewhere else than stick it out and wait for an opportunity. Take time to develop inside the program YOU CHOSE out of high school. Didn't like the Aidan Bouman transfer either, guarantee had he been patient he would be the unanimous starter right now with Dekkers likely out. But he put me before we and wanted to find greener grass in his mind.

I've been tossing back and forth with this idea and I think I'd like JJ to start, but it probably makes more sense to have Rocco start given he at least has some experience.

Thoughts?
I think Rocco gets the nod and then 1 of 3 things happens.

1. Rocco excels and keeps the job. This most likely develops into an eventual QB controversy as Kohl seems the heir apparent. If Rocco is all conference caliber then maybe Kohl xfers. These seem like good problems to have.

2. Rocco is OK but not great. We see a lot more situational usage of the transfer QB we picked up (I think he is a Lanning type) and Kohl plays enough to get some experience and not burn his redshirt.

3. It doesn’t matter what Rocco does. Kohl is the obvious answer once the season gets underway and midway through CMC makes the switch just like he did with Purdy.

Rocco at 6'1 205 has him on par with Purdy's sophomore season when he was listed at 6'1 203.

They are built the same- little smaller.

Rocco gets the nod to start the year to show what he has

There's also a difference between alternating QBs, and having a second QB who has a specific role in the offense. I think that saying applies more to the former, and we are talking more about the latter for this upcoming season.
I agree with you on that.

We need to start Rocco and let him show what he can do. If he can beat UNI and Iowa, then we know we have something. If he can't, then at least he knows he got his shot before he thinks about leaving.

Something like this I think where Rocco starts the season and depending on how he does and how we are doing as a team if we are struggling CMC makes the change at some point and see what Kohl can do. Once Purdy got his shot he took the job and ran with it and I would think that the staff would make that change if they felt that Kohl was ready and gave us the best chance to win with him at QB. Who knows, maybe during camp JJ turns out to be the clear cut option and gets the start from week 1. I doubt that happens but if the staff thinks he gives us the best chance to win games it shouldn't matter if he is a true freshman, Campbell has shown that he will play the guys he feels give us the best chance to win and it doesn't matter how long you have been in the program - if you beat out the guy ahead of you then you will play.

JUCO’s aren’t brought it at the QB position for no reason. They are brought it because
a. your QB room is not good or
b. You have no depth

In this case I assume the JUCO was brought in because the staff knew Dekkers was going to/will be suspended for at least a few games. Kohl is going to redshirt unless he’s just so good they have to put him on the field. If Dekkers is suspended, the starter will be either Becht or the JUCO.

I remember telling people on this site that Steele Jantz would be the starter come game one years ago and getting blasted by most saying he wasn’t brought in to play. Yes he was, JUCOs are brought in to play. The JUCO kid in this situation was likely brought in because of the Dekkers situation, and the staff knew it needed someone with college experience at least being the primary backup. He was brought in so the staff wasn’t forced the play a true freshman.

Hughes is the wild card, has only thrown 8 interceptions in his college career so far and from what I've been told has impressed the coaches. My guess is a dual QB system with Rocco and Hughes.
I've posted a few times over the past month that Hughes has impressed a lot and fully expect him to get some meaningful minutes. How many of those minutes will depend on how Rocco plays and what situations dictate. He has great poise, good accuracy, and some mobility. If Rocco struggles, Hughes takes over. If Rocco does good, Hughes compliments him.

Kohl is impressing the hell out of everybody with how quickly he's learning, but he's got development to do alongside that learning and it's likely he won't play much unless something bad has happened.

Like what I see for the most part. My only critique is his throwing motion/release looks a little clunky. I am a super amateur scout when it comes to football though, for what it's worth.
Don't sell yourself short. All of us on here are over qualified scouts and coaches, that's why Iowa State had to settle on Matt Campbell.
