I've been tossing back and forth with this idea and I think I'd like JJ to start, but it probably makes more sense to have Rocco start given he at least has some experience.

It’s like that everywhere in P5 football. It’s rare to see a guy stick around to be a career backup.I don't care honestly. I trust the staff to give the job to the most deserving candidate. Only thing that kind of sucks is that if JJ does win the job right out of fall camp or at any point during the season, we likely see Rocco transfer out. Can't seem to keep back up QBs in Ames. The kids all want to play, which I get. Just an unfortunate result of the one-time free transfer rule IMO.
Assumptions are that he is part of the Gamblin' Smoke & FireWhat are we all assuming with Dekkers? Did I miss something?
Yeah, there is a saying that goes something along the lines of "If you have 2 starting QBs, you have none". Historically though, we have seen it work to some extent. Park/Lanning, year comes to mind, then of course the one you mentioned with Jantz, Barnett, and Richardson. I think it puts a cap on what you can do and how much success you can have, but we have examples of it leading to 6 win seasons and bowl eligibility, which is pretty good by our standards. We won 6 games with Jantz, Barnett, and Richardson. Anything can happen.
I want to see Rocco get the start with Hughes utilized like K State used to run their stable of big, mobile QBs over the years.
Let Kohl get some reps when game allows it. Keep that redshirt year unless he has to play.
Id bet on this as well. Rocco takes most snaps, Hughes comes in for short yardage, and an occasional pass, a la Joel Lanning.Hughes is the wild card, has only thrown 8 interceptions in his college career so far and from what I've been told has impressed the coaches. My guess is a dual QB system with Rocco and Hughes.
Feel like we should wait for Rocco to actually do something on the field before we worry about him transferring.I don't care honestly. There's also a difference between alternating QBs, and having a second QB who has a specific role in the offense. I think that saying applies more to the former, and we are talking more about the latter for this upcoming season.Yeah, there is a saying that goes something along the lines of "If you have 2 starting QBs, you have none".
